Alternative backing ideas?
« on: June 28, 2017, 13:24:14 PM »
Does anyone ever use something other than cotton or sheeting for their quilt backs? I read a post on another forum about using flannel (pajama flannel) but they said it didn't wear very well. Another person said they used minky but it was "the devil" to quilt. Anyone had any experience with trying to create a cuddly backing?

Me Miss, me ( waves hand in air to get attention)I have backed a few quilts with the thin fleece throws you can buy very reasonable in the "cheap  shops " Don't know if you have them over the water? I recently bought a pack of 2 for £4.99 from B & M. (8.43 Aussie $ ) They're thin enough to quilt and give a cosy finish. I think they are about 40" x50"
P.S. You don't always need wadding when using fleece  <3

Someone on here did a fleece background with stars and stitched round some of the stars. That was very pretty and very effective.
No idea who.  :(

Are you thinking of my Shakespear in the Park quilt?

That is backed with fleece - I thought it would be easier than than wadding and backing as it's about 80" x 80".  In the event it was still too big to manoever under the machine and so it got hand quilted - you can just about see the quilting in the photos.

Hand quilting through fleece instead of regular wadding is not easy.  I think I broke 2 or 3 fairly hefty hand sewing needles in the process and a thimble is a must!

Despite the difficulties it has been a good make.  Used with just a top sheet it is the right weight for this time of year and is on the bed now.

Another fab creation from the House of Brenda. That's a brilliant idea usinf fleece. I always think traditional and it doesn't dawn on me to do things like that.
The one I was talking about was a baby blanket and I seem to remember it was quite small. I'll have another look.

Ah yes, I remember that.  Machine quilting around the stars on the fleece.

I use fleece and minky on many baby quilts. I still use a thin cotton batting, but you don't have to. I have had no problems with minky: I just use lots of pins all over, but then you have to do that even with cotton backing. Maybe the cotton batting helps to stabilise it, I don't know, but I've done both straight and free motion quilting and it's been fine, making a cosy and soft quilt.

I have a winter quilt that my husband's grandmother made that has a flannel backing. It is nice and warm and has no problem with repeated wash. I wish I had a photo but it is in the storage in the New World.
