So Brenda, if we don't see you for a while we know why, you are trying to work your way out from under strips of fabric. I always feel that the cutting is what takes the time, sewing is easier until it comes to matching the seams, but if you can chain piece it's great. You'll have to spray your machine to cool it down ;)

After several marathonsewing sessions  :vintage: I've now got 36 blocks, two border strips with corners and lots of mini-blocks for the other two borders.

Because of the way I plan to QAYG it all has to be joined in strips (I don't think quarters will work) it that means that the second two borders will have to be attached in bits to each end of the strips.

It was quite a challenge to get the blocks arranged in the sequence I want, I must label it all before they get moved.  Also I must pay attention to the sequences of border strips to keep the pattern correct.

Brenda, that is going to be stunning.  I love your arrangement of the blocks, I don't think I have seen that layout before.

I've got the backing fabric and it's all ready now for the scary part; quilting it.

Ideally I'd like to do FMQ squiggles over the light parts and something else over the dark parts.  A suggestion from the book is parallel diagonal lines, but, the no-sashing QAYG method means only quilting to about an inch or so from the joins and then quilting over the joins when quilting the next strip.  In four places the dark abuts the light right on the joins so that is out.  -<  I'm thinking now that it will be vermicelli squiggles all over.

So, maybe use two different colours, variegated blue over the lights and cream over the darks? or the other way around?  I've got both colours of thread.

Oh that is just beaut! Regarding quilting thread....I'd be inclined to use the variegated blue thread on the dark, and the lighter thread on the light fabric. I'm thinking with such an eye catching pattern you don't want to "take away' from its striking-ness by introducing contrasting threads to it? The variegation alone will add just a hint of "here I am" to the quilting without competing with the quilt pattern itself. Just my two bobs worth. :)

Gorgeous stuff Brenda, just gorgeous ...

I agree with Ruby, keep the cream on the light and the blue to the blue.
