sizing on men's patterns
« on: September 30, 2017, 14:32:40 PM »
Has anyone else noticed the trend away from actual measurements on patterns?  Specifically, none of them mention the neck sizes on shirts anymore.  Even Vogue only give chest and waist sizes.   Back of the packet gives finished length and hem width at the bottom.  I bought the Vogue shirt pattern but had to open it to  measure the collar band sizes.
If anyone else wants to know, 40 chest has 16 1/2 collar measurement and they go up from there.

Don't tell me I measured it wrong...off to unpack it again and check.   That's why I want to read it on the pattern.

It's always worth checking the companies websites for more detailed measurements.

My old pattern is indeed 15 1/2" for a 40" chest, just like the table.
The new one is 16" for the smallest size, 40"  (not 16 1/2" sorry)  It was difficult to measure with the overwriting, but it is definitely bigger.  I measured button to buttonhole and then overlaid the old piece.  After remeasuring many times, my head is spinning, hope it is clear when I come to cut out.
Their own  table  says, "size is determined by the neck measurement". Then why not put it on???  The pattern is actually is from 40" as the front shows, but the back of the envelope only gives measurements for 42" up.
McCalls do S/M/L etc and give the chest sizes for them, but no neck size.   Soon it will all be a moot point, because the men's patterns are disappearing.

Pattern catalogues are getting thinner as the years go by.  And there are a,ways more discarded ones than new ones.  I suppose it is because there are lots of independent companies around now.  I'm all for that, but not all of them are very good.  And some are drafting for men too!  :)
