I can't remember whose ideas these were but thank you both. Someone had made a quilt with loads of plus signs which I thought was lovely so had to be tried. Someone else mentioned having a white sheet attached to a wall to lay out possible designs. I've attached an old white fleece to the top drawer of my chest of drawers to do this. When not in use it rolls up and goes into the drawer. Plus signs still a work in progress but is very easy to see how it will look without crawling around on the floor which was former option. I'm only a dark side novice but now running happily down the slippery slope... :)

That's looking good.  What a great way to use up lots of different fabrics.
I like the roll up sheet and put it in the drawer idea.

My white sheet is still pinned to the built in cupboards in the sewing room...DH built the cupboards when he was 14...only problem is when you need something in the cupboard  :\
