Exactly my thoughts UttaRetch, thank you -  I was still wondering about the princess seams though.

I'm struggling with this whole idea, as I now realise it's that material that I really, really want!!  I'll keep looking to see if I can find anything that's (almost) the same.

When I saw the Joe Brown coat on your link it reminded me of a jacket pattern I bought in June this year. It's worth looking at this pattern too.
The collar would need to be made a bit larger and obviously its a jacket so
would need to be made into a longer version for a coat. It's also unlined but
it does appear to be very similar and has the princess line too!

Also, bear in mind the Joe Brown coat is 93% polyester and 7% wool so even though it looks like a wool tartan it isn't as heavy that. I would imagine Joe Brown designs their own fabric so difficult to source exactly the same but hopefully there is some look alike fabric with a similar composition.

I like the coat and fabric too. Will google some more.

That was one of the patterns I saw too, Lizzy, but then rejected as it's probably too fitted and I'd have to lengthen it.  In the meantime I may have just ordered some of this one - https://www.myfabrics.co.uk/81-poso-f17-019_tartan-jacket-fabric-grey.html  and the other samples.  I must check and see if I already have a pattern.  Then I'll have to get some lining, I wonder how pink that grey/pink is...

This is the one I've had my eye on. I should think it would work with checks. The picture doesn't show it in a good light, but I really like the line drawing.

Yes that's nice and, as you say, should be easier to match up.the checks.

I think you may have cracked it! I could reshape the front edges and add buttons - and again I'm wondering if I have that pattern.

It might also be worth taking a look at McCalls patterns as they are half price at the mo. There is a coat pattern with a  version with acentral tartan panel that might be of interest.

I've done lots of looking and in the end I couldn't decide between Vogue 8933 and Butterick 6497 - so ordered both  :|

This is a new release.  I looked at it, but didn't think it was sufficiently close to your reference garment.  I can see that it has simplier lines and pattern matching may be less of a headache.

I like the way the collar looks like it sits nice and close around the neck, and I will enlarge it to more of a point, and as you say, nice simple lines, but still shaped.  I just worry it may be too fitted as I go out at the waist, not in!  :|  That's partly why I got the Vogue as well, although I worried that may be too shapeless!

Both patterns look nice. I'm sure you can grade up any areas you need to! I'm always adding a wee bit of ease round the middle. That's why Sandra Betzina is such a good fit - she's already added extra ease round the tum.
