Fallen at first hurdle
« on: January 03, 2018, 15:12:06 PM »
OK so I decided to join you, picked out a project, decided to start small and make a cover for my new over locker but fallen at the first hurdle.
I have been looking at batting but no idea what to buy  :'( I thought batting was batting but there are so many different types I am bamboozled.
Is there an idiots guide to what batting you need for what type of project.
I do have a couple of quilting books but they just talk about batting in general.

Don't stress SMM, there are lots of different types of batting but basically they all do the same job.

Your overlocker is not going worry what type you use.

You can use all sorts of things for this type of project, something like a cheap fleece blanket will work fine for something that's a practice run.

If you want to buy something, I'd go for a basic polyester batting that's not too thick.  Get into the fancy stuff when you're sure you want to do more complex work.

Here are a few links to help your choice, but as Ellabella says your overlocker won't mind what's inside the fabric sandwich.  If you want the cover to be stiff enought o stand up on its own try pelmet vilene, with or without a layer of cheap polyester wadding.  BTW wadding is the English name, batting the American name.

Wadding, wadding, wadding...pleeeaase. I know P&Q is USAcentric and it's batting over there, but please let's not lose our own wadding  :D
I always use 80 / 20 for quilts, but for something like you are making, polyester is fine ( and cheaper )

fallen ???? !!!

I think not SMM, you are simply assessing your choices !

For a sewing machine cover (yeah ! Like I know all about them ! :P) you will want, I imagine, some stiffocity to hold its shape, Brenda's spot on with that pelmet stuff.
Whether you want to give it some depth or softness with a layer of wadding is up too you but I too would recommend Poly for the job. I don't like it myself for quilts, wall hangings and the like but for a Sewing machine cover I think it will do a grand job!

Onwards!

In my total ignorance of anything P&Q I always thought that 'batting' was something that was like felt or fleece, while 'wadding' was the frothy stuffy that is found in duvets, etc.
Clearly I have been living in a hole in the ground. :|
