The Making of Fashion - on the Google Cultural Institute

It can be a useful resource for just marvelling at how some things are made or as a starting point to explore or research fabrics, garments, fashion styles and so on - eg. The Sari, The Kimono, National Dress, Materials, Craft Techniques.

For those interested in embroidery and beadwork, scroll down and explore the item on Nyonya Needlework - I am utterly in awe of the handiwork on the 8 panel table screen.

If you're interested in shirts then you'll be blown away by the closeups of the top stitching and details of the shirts shown in the item on 130 years of Turnbull and Asser (of James Bond and Kingsman fame).  Don't know which I feel more - impressed or envy.
Factoid - shirts stitched together using a stitch length of 18-20 stitches per inch (of course you'll want to be accurate, no unpicking there hahaha).

enjoy a trip down the rabbit hole . . .

The Antique Pattern Library

An amazing public resource of designs and patterns.
I was introduced to the Antique Pattern Library by Maggie Cooper (aka Digimad)
It's been very useful for finding source samples for digitising and from spending a bit of time exploring I found lots of inspiration for other things including a couple of patterns for some interesting crochet stitches that were useful for using up some yarn.

Just one example of fonts/monograms - may be of interest to cake decoraters, calligraphers, embroidery fans.
A friend used one of the designs on Page 8 of this Stained Glass Patterns book as the basis of a design for a P&Q project.  It's the one that looks like a winding york stone path in sand, soft green and blue.

An example of a Fashion Magazine from 1835

An example of quilt block patterns

On Page 32 of this fashion catalogue, the centre coat shows a detail on the back that I want to use on a panelled coat or jacket.

Love these sort of resources.  But you can spend an awful lot of time just looking things up.  :)

Having a great time dipping in and out of these resources. Many thanks to you all. Must download and save this thread for future consumption too.
Hopefully back more regularly! Ballroom sewing may be permanently paused but bag making is the current focus.

Meyers Ornament - great source for motifs and pattern ideas

or via the search option https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=meyer%27s+ornament&title=Special:Search&profile=images&fulltext=1&searchToken=crdexksbuhd8aroj7pd4d3igq

If you're looking for inspiration from images/sounds/videoclips for all sorts of art/craft etc. then WikiMedia Commons can be another useful place to look for things.
eg. illustrations of flowers/plants, nature etc. for embroidery ideas,

All sorts of resources can be found at https://archive.org/about/
Can be useful for students exploring around a topic as well as enthusiasts looking to find copyright and royalty free sources for inspiration and designs.

Do take a look at this little treasure and read all about the thimble people
(I acknowledge that there are all sorts of issues raised in the subtext because it is of it's time- but as an example of an approach to teaching kids it's inventive bearing in mind it's quite modern for 1913 )

Examples -
Briggs book of Transfer Designs which is a good source for quilting patterns and embroidery designs
This is a book of embroidery patterns published in 1730 - you can see what embroidery patterns looked like back then.
This Embroidery Pattern book from 1919

Sewing projects for Girls Club (American) from 1889 take a look.  I get the impression that there were 'canning clubs' for girls associated with growing and preserving food and this was a resource of a small book of projects produced for group leaders.

More here for example Take a look at the Parisian Ladies' Tailoring System from 1815

Just play with a few search terms and see what you find.

This link is about fitting and the fitting process.
The example is fitting a corset, but the method and all the issues mentioned apply for fitting any bodice for either a standard/traditional fit or a close fit.
Paying attention to proportions and shape is just as important as measurements.
