I think it would work in anything that isn't single-thickness jersey. I'd go for a cheap double knit for your first to get a better idea.

A double knit would most probably not be stretchy enough (50% is quite a lot).
I think Rayon(Viscose)/Lycra or an ITY knit would be the better choice.

I've sewn it in a double knit and it was fine!

ITY is hard to find in the UK.

Oh, I didn't know that ITY is tricky to find in the UK. Living in Hong Kong, I'm not too keen on it or anything synthetic really, don't like the idea of boiling in my own sweat  ;)

Girl Charlee is a UK based company that give fabric weights and also percentage stretch details. They are not the cheapest but they specialise in knit fabric and are very helpful if you phone them up.
