Title: opinions please on "rose" quilt
Post by: rubywishes on June 17, 2017, 08:55:49 AM
I am starting to put together a lap quilt for a dear friend who loves roses but I can't decide if I am making this waaaaaay to busy and just can't visualise it anymore so opinions would be heaven sent 0_0

(1) Is 60" square too big for a lap quilt?  My blocks are going to be 6" finished and I'm wondering if 54" is too narrow?   She is a "comfy/chunky" lady, about 5'10 in height.
(2) I'm planning 40 x 6"  9patches from the 5 pairs of floral and plain fat 1/4's in the picture, alternating with 15 plain blocks/squares (left over from the 9 patch fat 1/4's) and 45 fussy cut blocks/squares cut from the large pink rose floral fabric in the photos. Is this going to be overkill with the fussy cut rose?
(3) I really don't want to have to buy any more fabric but do you think I should quieten it down by reducing the fussy cut squares by half and replacing them with plain blocks/squares?

Ruby, I can't offer an opinion, firstly because I'm not a quilter, and secondly, I have no taste at all which does not include overkill!

Whatever you do, your friend will remember you, every time she snuggles into it!

You've got a good mix of lights, darks and busy prints there so it should all look good when put together.

I would rather have 60"x60" than 54"x54" for a lap quilt, simply because there's a bit more to tuck in when it's chilly.

Your mix looks fine to me, a good variety of tones and colours  :)
I often do 60" x 54" for lap quilts, so 60" x 60" would not be an unusual size.
I'm sure it'll look lovely, very fresh and summery  <3

Thanks everyone, most appreciated :)  I'll get back into it tomorrow. Now another question....is it better for the 9 patches to all be the same...that is, 5 blocks floral and 4 blocks plain or should I swap it around a bit? Would that make it look a bit messy?

1. 60" is fine. Nice size in my opinion.
2. Not overkill at all
3. Your fabrics are fine, nice mix, good palette, should make a lovely 9 patch quilt :)

Look forward to seeing it in progress and finished!

If you make all the blocks 5 blocks floral and 4 blocks plain
you will end up with groups of 4 floral squares togther - which will be fine, but make sure you use a mix of florals in each block, even if the plains of each block are all the same.

But Brenda, if each 9 patch floral is alternated with a plain or floral fussy cut block won't that stop that happening? At the most I will just have the 9 patch blocks "meeting" diagonally at the corner points? ugh..scratching my head now trying to visualise!

Yes, of course it will. :flower:

You said right at the beginningof the the thread about alternating 9-patches with plain squares.

Cut yourself some coloured in paper squares and have a play with them. Visualisation sorted!
