Some favourite eBay shops are:
regencyrags  - reasonably priced - an eclectic mix of jersey, viscose etc.
fabfabricsbymaggie - particularly good for wools, tweeds and cashmere. Maggie often has Harris tweed and other Scottish and Yorkshire tweeds.

I have recently ordered from here having found them on my hunt for nice patterned jersey. I got some really nice peach fabric with swallows on it in the clearance as well as some fake suede in navy with some box detail on it. I also splurged on some grey jersey with clouds and some with sheep on it (the knitter in me couldn't resist it). I also ordered some plain cotton jersey which was very nice as well.

If like me you are ordering in Ireland so using a parcel forwarding service just beware the samples came separate from my main order (they have to be phoned in or emailed which should have been the clue for me!) so were a second parcel but if in the UK it was very prompt.

Francesca,

Thanks for starting this list as the South-East is a bit of desert for fabrics, etc. and I now order quite a lot on line.

For quilting fabrics I like JB Quilting Fabrics.
They have a very good range and a 'design board' so that you can see how fabrics look together.  Postage costs are very reasonable and delivery is nearly always next day even when I have ordered in the afternoon.
The only negative is that you have to order in half metre units.

Ones I'd like to add for dance fabrics, particularly lycra, that I haven't seen listed elsewhere here are:

The big three (but also the most expensive)
https://www.chrisanne-clover.com/products/fabrics (https://www.chrisanne-clover.com/products/fabrics)
http://www.dsi-london.com/dance-fabrics.html (http://www.dsi-london.com/dance-fabrics.html)
http://www.trim-it-uk.com/direct/index.html (http://www.trim-it-uk.com/direct/index.html)

The following have smaller ranges but sell decent quality dance fabrics at budget prices.
http://www.calicolaine.co.uk/ (http://www.calicolaine.co.uk/)
http://www.thecheapshoptiptree.co.uk/ (http://www.thecheapshoptiptree.co.uk/)
http://www.whitelodgefabric.com/ (http://www.whitelodgefabric.com/)

These two are worth a try if you're struggling with a tight budget but always get samples before buying.

I've had several lots from here, good service. I've also visited the shop on a couple of occasions, it's a bit or a rabbit warren but I've bought stuff on both visits. Not to be confused with The textile centre.

This is one I like, especially for jersey. They are based in Germany and shipping is a bit pricey but free if you spend €75.
Fascinated by what they call 'Middle Age Fabric'!!!!

I have been on the point of buying things from MyFabrics a couple of times and found exactly the same thing significantly  cheaper here, even with shipping factored in.

Another good one for quilting is Quilters Haven
They have a good range, sell in increments of 0.05m and service is excellent.
I phoned today when I was having a problem with an online order.  The lady took my order over the phone, said she would pack it straight away and put it in the post tonight.  That was 4.30pm.

I stumbled across this one the other day and have just taken delivery of some really lovely jerseys.  <3  (Oo er, I'm supposed to be on a fabric fast) I ordered yesterday afternoon and it arrived this morning, despite choosing the cheapest form of delivery. I think they could become a favourite. (After I registered I had an email giving 15% off this weekend)

I second the textile centre on eBay for a good range and great value. Can anyone recommend where to buy 10 inch regular zips in a wide range of colours at a reasonable price? The cheapest I've found is 65p with jaycotts which is pretty good; I want loads though!

Not an online shop as such but one of my favourite ebay suppliers is: wallpaperalan
(Just search for the username on ebay).

He does not have a huge amount of stuff and it is mostly curtain fabric but he seems to get samples and ends of lines of Liberty silks from time to time at excellent prices. I bought a super roll of Liberty  curtaining - a sort of art nouveau tapestry pattern for DD's flat recently.

At the mo he has three Liberty jerseys listed. They are for long lengths - even I can't use 20m of jersey no matter how yummy it is. I contacted him and offered him £60 for 5m lengths of each of the three jerseys he has. This was accepted on Saturday morning and the parcel arrived on Monday morning. And fab stuff it is too. The lightest weight is the flowery jersey followed by the paisly then the leaves on red. The flowers and paisley are polyester jersey with a good bit of elastane and the red with leaves is a more conventional viscose jersey. They are all lovely and drapey.. I've never seen Liberty do poly jersey before which tends to reinforce my suspicion that these  are sample rolls. The paisley one does not photograph too well as it has a slight sheen. Anyway here they are! If you fancy any of this fabric it would be worth contacting him. I think he may struggle to sell long lengths as of course one does not need a great long length for a dress unlike a big pair of curtains.

I often pick up 10 zips for a quid at the market.  I don't worry about lengths as I generally get long ones and cut them down.  Saves faffing!

For anyone still looking for some Japanese fabrics for the sewalong, try Japan Crafts.

Katie sources the fabric herself in Japan, and her prices are excellent, as the postage charges.
Highly recommended.

I just wanted to add Elephant in my Handbag (http://www.elephantinmyhandbag.com/) to recommended online fabric shops.

I found them when googling for cotton lawn, ordered a piece on Sunday night and they phoned me first thing on Monday morning because there was a query over my address (which meant that I had the pleasure of receiving a call saying 'Hello, I'm calling from the elephant in my handbag.'   :D )  Delivery was £1.50 for first class (this was just a metre of fabric) and I received it on Tuesday morning.

The fabric is gorgeous - as good quality lawn as I have ever seen or felt, and was £10.25 for a metre.

A big tick in every box!

[Edited to add one small niggle - some fabrics are priced by the metre, some by the half metre, and some by the fat quarter.  The info is there, but maybe not always as blatant as I would like.]

@Efemera & @So Chic, you both posted last year on here about So Sew English Fabrics which, rather confusingly, is an American shop.

I just wondered if you've come across the UK fb group So Sew English Fabrics UK Edition (a closed group so you have to request to join). They have a system for ordering using a group US address which then gets forwarded to UK at a cheaper delivery cost. I've not ordered myself but thought you might be interested.

Thanks for the information and I will check it out on my return home.  We’re on the Isle of Man for a few days before returning to our narrowboat which is currently moored in Liverpool Docks and then cruising back to our home mooring.  I’m planning a visit to Calico Laine while in Liverpool and hope I’ve enough space to stash anything I might buy.

SC, if you are landing in Liverpool, a short train journey will take you to my local fabric shop in St Helens.  The shop is a short walk from the station.

@So Chic  Don't forget about Abakhan in Liverpool - it might be easier to get to than Calico Laine.

If you are using public transport, an all area Saveaway (https://www.merseytravel.gov.uk/tickets/compare-tickets/pages/saveaway.aspx) for a day would get you to Calico Laine, Abakhan and St Helens. Unfortunately, Liverpool Lime Street station is closed at the moment and there are no direct trains to St Helens until 11 June.

[If you were to get a Saveaway, paper tickets can still be bought from the main ticket office at Lime Street, saving you the £1 charge for a Walrus card if you were to buy from Merseytravel ticket offices.]

I very much enjoyed visiting their big store in Neston en route to a visit to Lancashire a couple of years ago but I don't know how easy it will be by public transport as it's on a trading estate (Clayhill Ind Est) rather than in the shopping area.

@So Chic , their shop in Liscard is too far to walk from the Birkenhead ferry terminal but you can get there on the 409 bus (half hour ride) from the Woodside Interchange in front of the ferry terminal.   :D

Do let us know if you manage to get there.

Just sent you a pm with info of a shorter bus journey from Seacombe ferry. My dh is so quick to find things like this.  :)

Thank you all for the suggestions in Liverpool.  I managed to visit Calico Laine (Liscard) but the Neston shop seemed more difficult to reach by bus.  I will try to visit the shop in St.Helens but we’re due to leave on Friday and have several things planned over the next few days.  I have my bus pass and am moored by the Liverpool One bus station so no problems with transport.

I'm a big fan of ClothSpot.  They don't have an enormous range and they tend to sell out quick.  I got an email last Friday and by the time I decided I'd better buy they were down to only just over 3 meters.  They do have some nice stuff in though.  Another one is Fabric Godmother, again not a large range but good enough for me.

I like this online shop, Patterns and Plains,  it’s specifically aimed at dressmaking.

https://patternsandplains.com

New and a relatively small fabric range at the moment but the owner used to work in the industry and makes her own clothes, as a result she really knows her stuff.
What makes it different is that there are videos of the fabrics so you can see the drape and the scale of any print.

Also  you can order in small increments of fabric eg 1.7m  - you’re not limited to whole or half metres. Handy if you don’t want to be left with any surplus or if you just want a small amount for colourblocking or a trim.

Material Magic

They were at the Harrogate K & S show last November and had some fabulous fabrics on the stall that no-one else had brought.
It was a pleasure to to see and buy fabrics that are current season rather than a year or so behind and they had some beautiful and interesting denim style and chambray fabrics.

Anyway their ebay shop is Material Magic 1 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/materialmagic1)
and

I'm sure that they have been mentioned already somewhere on here but a big round of applause for www.fabric.com . I was first alerted to their loveliness by some fabulous black eyelet fabric (broderie anglaise) that @Manuela got from them - she had spotted that it was the same as some eyelet on Marcy Tilton's site but much cheaper. I ordered 5 yards from them in the summer. It came super quick and no customs charges. And very yummy it is too.

In their recent sale they had packs of 20 fat quarters of Kaffe Fassett fabrics at $25 +pp. Even with the postage ($19.50) a little research convinced me that this was much cheaper than I'd get in the UK even if I did pay customs charges. It works out at the equivalent of $7 a yard. I ordered the first pack on a Friday and it arrived the following Thursday. Having seen how nice this was, I ordered a second pack in a different colour way on Friday at 4.30pm and it arrived today (Monday) at 3pm. I could have saved postage by buying the two packs together but then I would have been much more likely to attract customs charges and I wanted to see what they were like first. They post using UPS and the tracking shows your little package leaving Philadelphia Airport then arriving at East Midlands Airport a few hours later. I must admit it isn't a very green way to buy your fabric as two flights are involved - but their plane from Philadelphia presumably carries other parcels not just my little packet.  :D

I'm afraid they do seem to have stopped selling these particular packs now but the website is definitely worth checking from time to time as there is loads of lovely stuff there.. And, no I haven't joined the Dark Side (well maybe slightly  ;) ) - I have some wearable art and other household projects in mind.

Anyone ordered from Mood Fabrics?

Fabric.com have some nice non-pilling ponte knits as well

Medium to heavy weight
Telio Jockey Ponte (https://www.fabric.com/find?SearchText=Telio+jockey+ponte+knit)

Medium weight
Telio Ponte Leggero (https://www.fabric.com/collection/telio-ponte-leggero-knit)

I’ve ordered from Moods Fabrics, I find their website clunky and it can take 4-6 weeks for the fabric to arrive. Customer service isn’t that grand either. Last time it took them a week to tell me that something I ordered wasn’t actually available.

Gosh I haven't ordered from fabric.com for years!  They were some of the first online shops I'd ever used.  But I think the last package I got from them was caught for vast customs charges and then the fabric was a bit rubbishy when I opened it (probably my fault).  So I haven't bothered buying again from them, I am trying to restrict my online purchases to UK or European sites only.  Although I love Emmaonesock's fabrics, they are amazing (but, customs charges...) x

I think you were a bit unlucky @Nevis5 . The 3 parcels I've bought from fabric.com have all been over the customs limit (£18) and none have attracted charges. They would still have been worthwhile with the additional charges although it's nice not to pay any more@ I can find no customs docket on the UPS parcels (unlike ordinary post where there is usually something to indicate the value).

The customs limit is now £15.  I have had to pay £3 duty and £8 handling charge for the post office on a free pattern for a Craftsy course send from the USA.  I think my local area must be quite hot on things in that one time the exchange rate changed between me ordering and goods arriving and the amount was 20p over the limit so I had to pay the full £11.

I have just discovered https://www.stitchandknitbits.co.uk/

I was looking for interfacing and found them on eBay but in future will go direct to their website.

They have a good wide range and the prices seem reasonable, the interfacing came in individual bags with leaflets showing the fusing instructions.

There is free 2nd class postage and other postage options.

Off for a browse.

The fabric is lovely and it came very quickly. Prices are excellent.

Just found this Ebay shop. Haven't tried them but they seem to have a lot of nice prints - many John Lewis and Liberty designs.

Some seriously gorgeous fabrics here! :loveit: I had to stop after the tenth page. I could feel my heart rate increasing.

During the first lockdown, I wasted whiled away many a happy hour watching Abbie Anne Patchwork's wittering videos on YouTube.  This led to joining her Facebook group and to making several purchases from her online shop.   Yesterday at 11am, I made a purchase which has arrived this morning.

Just looking back over this thread and noting that I was singing the praises of fabric.com over a year ago. I had an email from them a few weeks ago to say that they no longer ship to the UK.

I have just managed to order two lengths of linen from myfabrics.co.uk, I think that they must have decided  to ship to the  UK again.

I looked at their site but I am waiting to find out how the customs charges and taxes will add up before I order.

Yes I'd be interested to see how the customs charges work - having failed to do an order with Driessenstoffen recently.

I've recently discovered pound a metre fabrics... the fabrics aren't all £1 a metre but there are some bargains.

I'm going to have to unrecommend Pound a Metre fabrics. I've had several orders from them and all fine. However the order I placed on 26th March has still not arrived on 13th April. I've sent two emails and one FB message but no reply. I see a couple of Trustpilot reviews saying much the same. If I don't hear in the next couple of days I'll see about requesting a refund via paypal and I'll leave an appropriate trustpilot review.

What a shame. I hope it comes right for you Tamnymore. It’s the sorting out that’s as much a pain as not receiving the goods. Thank you for the warning.

The fabric that I ordered from myfabrics arrived, they gave me 15% discount,  with shipping it worked out at £39, no duty to pay! Very good quality linen.

Has anyone bought from Lee Mill on line?
I have seen some paisley design ponte that I like. Thanks in advance.

I took  a chance and ordered the paisley ponte and am pleased with the fabric. Delivery was prompt, their website isn't particularly user friendly but they have some lovely curtain fabrics as well as dressmaking and craft fabrics. I'll be adding them to my preferred sites.

@Silver Rose Well that made me look!

I don't know how many have come across The Millshop Online.

I've been searching for curtain fabrics for most of my windows and found something I really liked in, I think, Just Fabrics. £12.95 a metre wasn't too bad a price but I kept searching other sites for other fabrics. Then the one first wanted was in The Millshop Online for £9.95 per m. Since I wanted 12m that was a decent saving. The fabric arrived quickly and was well-packaged. I have now ordered from them again. P&P is £8.95 though free over £125. Samples are free. They also do upholstery fabric.

Some of you might remember The Textile Centre - an online fabric shop which had lovely fabric at good prices and excellent customer service.

They apparently stopped trading for a while but have returned here (https://www.thetextilecentre.co.uk/)
Find them on eBay and on their own website. They mostly deal with remnants but do have a couple of Liberty fabrics at bargain prices. They list them as spun viscose but if you look at the labels one is a lantana and the other is a brushed cotton. They are only £7.99 pm inc p&p. Better still they currently have 20% off.on their website.

Thanks to @Morgan for reminding me of Little Legs Fabrics at Scorton. I visited yesterday afternoon as it's not to far away from home.
It's speciality is jersey fabric, various weights, plain and printed, not just child-friendly designs, AND you can get your pdf patterns printed at A0 size for £2 per sheet. I'm not sure of their postage prices/service but the ladies were friendly and helpful and there's a choice of 3 tearooms, 2 garden centres to visit within a mile or so. I did leave with a length, or 4 of jersey but plenty left for another week.
