Title: How small is too small? the purpose of patchwork...a question?
Post by: Vegegrow on March 09, 2017, 21:07:50 PM
I have really enjoyed Imi's BOM's I'm a beginner at patchwork and have never really planned and finished a designed quilt. this months BOM made me cut fabric into what I thought were  small pieces to sew them back together again... with a lovely result but something I found quite difficult.. not pattern wise but the whole premise of patchwork being the way to use up scraps .....I have made cushions with scraps of upholstery fabric and and cards with tiny bits of cotton but I never had to cut into a large piece of fabric  Am I alone in feeling this?... do I need patchwork and quilting therapy? :D

You're not alone Vegegrow.  I work as a craft tutor and teach English paper piecing.  I cringe every time I cut into a lovely fat quarter, just so I can sew it all together again.

But, it is an incredible relaxing craft and if you add a bit of gossiping and putting the world to rights in a group, my 3.5 hour class wizzes by.

I actually enjoy the precision of the cutting and piecing.  It hasn't ever occurred to me that I am cutting it up just to put it together again.  But now you come to mention it ........

I'm the same, too.  I have some lovely Textile Centre cotton for patchwork but can't bring myself to 'ruin' it by cutting it up.

I think it would be nice if we could please have a 'repurposed' section of the forum  8) I have some old clothes and the fabric from some old chair seat pads to make into something and it would be lovely to see what others make with salvaged fabric and scraps  :).

I found it difficult to watch a roll of Liberty fabric being cut in to small squares in a fabric shop even though the resulting bundles of fat quarters were very pretty.

Well, you know when you make clothes, all you're doing is cutting up fabric and sewing it back together again. And it's not as if you don't get something useful and beautiful and individual at the end.

Keep on keeping on!

I love scrappy quilts especially scrappy quilts for children as there's so much in them to look at, so you don't have to use big new pieces of fabric all the time.  I often use contrasting light and dark fabrics and like to have many different light fabrics too for the background.
Ive made a few memory quilts from old clothes and they have been really interesting challenges!

Hmmmmmmm, an interesting thought to ruminate on!  I find that I am usually so excited about how my quilt is going to come together I love to start cutting the fabric up!

When I worked in a fabric shop I asked my colleague if she had ever done patchwork she said 'Why would I cut something up to sew it back together again'

Yes but you usually don't cut several  1 1/2" squares... that's sooooo small :'(

I keep my scraps as I can't bear to throw anything away that 'might come in useful'. I started a scrappy quilt using the bits but that has been sidelined for other projects at the moment. I don't mind cutting into fabric if I feel that it's the right one for what I want to make. As for paper piecing - that's something I've thought of to take away with me if I go on holiday, I did some hexagons many many years ago  and found it a bit boring but I didn't do P&Q then and my patience wasn't as great then either.

Okay Ladies,

I'm delighted to report that not one but two peeps have requested my scraps!

As I said I sorted these in January after tidying the ever messy sewing store so I now have more (mainly pink and Green!!! ) to add to the bag.

I will split it down the middle and send to both Vege and Katykittykattykitt...

But be warned I'll want to see makes from them..Pics please!

And Low, rather than throwing away that FQ that has 1/2 cut away, why not donate them to gals like these?

How small is too small you ask? No such thing as 'too small' when it comes to patchwork Vegegrow!

You see Lowena why I hang onto every scrap? In truth I made this years ago with young eyes and am unlikely to make another.  ;)

It's 1:12 scale I've been meaning to make a bed for it to go on. I did make 1:16 bed, painted tiny dowelling to represent iron and real brass rails and knobs (own design) but never got around to making the larger one. Ho hum one of these days!

Thankyou Vegegrow,
From what I can remember the actual metal template was 1/4 inch but by the time I'd draw round it to make the paper shape and then wrapped the fabric round it obviously came out bigger. I'm guessing it's about 5/8 inch. The fabric was mainly Liberty lawn and I sewed it with silk thread.

Did you have a dolls house or did you not catch the bug? It's a hobby I've neglected for many years ... not entirely given up on mind. I was going to make one of the room boxes into a quilt exhibition!

No I didn't catch the dolls house bug but my Mum has the most amazing custom made dolls house... its an old record cabinet from the 1930's the top lifts ( where the record player was )and is the attic nursery and the maids room
the lower doors open into a hall and drawing room on one floor and a dining room and bedroom on the next... DD was brought up with it and used to decorate it for Christmas ...she was so careful with it ...

Blimey!!!! Too Teensy for me.

My mum made me a dolls house out of an old trunk (stood on its end) for my fifth birthday in the mid '60's.
She was a seriously artistic and unusual (at the time) mum.
She even electrified it !! Don't ask me how...this was predollshouse enthusiasts days where you can get everything and anything for your hobby.I adored it and filled it up with clunky 60's Dolls House furniture.

I received it in the mid 80's from my dad and started filling it with beautiful (and seriously expensive when you add it all up) dolls house furniture and knick-knacks, including a reclining nude lady (whom I fancied was me) usually to be found in the bath.

Sadly when we moved to our present house there was no room to display it so it rests unloved in the attic  :'(

I now fantasize about moving to a bigger house and having a dedicated sewing room and a space to display my dollshouse, but that's not going to happen in this lifetime...unless we win the lottery and the chances of that are like snow in the desert in August

The dolls house I played with and made furniture out of match boxes for was on loan from my mums cousin. I also bought a few pieces for it out of my pocket money so you can imagine how upset I was when I came home from school one day to find mum had returned it to her cousin who had just had a baby girl!

I bought a second hand one many years later but had to leave it behind when I moved house. Yes I have the  fantasy of a dedicated DH room as over the years I've made and bought several good pieces incuding a vintage sewing machine with a handle that turns and the needle that goes up and down. Sadly it doesn't actually work LOL!

The one your Mum made Iminei sounds gorgeous!

Well as she ran Dolls house and Miniature Fairs ..she found the cabinet a bit like this Pic and got one of the Dolls house makers to make it into a home ... and a lot of stallholders paid for their stalls with the most amazing furniture and well everything from tiny reading glasses and a newspaper which live in the draw of a desk in the hall to a wardrobe full of clothes... yes I will get pics but you'll have to wait.. don't have any plans to go over there at the moment

To the Girls waiting for scraps.....

Thy time draws nigh!

I am at present organising and cutting for a Jan Hassard workshop this Saturday and am about to move the Triffid
from its overwintering place (ie the spare room/my wardrobe room/my art room/my stash store room)
so will be having a monster tidy up...

The bags are big girls, (over) filling rapidly........I think we may need a box.

Ladies, you two very patient Ladies...

I have forced the issue of my procrastination in sending you scraps...

By upturning the overflowing basket on my dining room table!

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/jeFYfJdGpkO4tJkXhJR0NKyofpuNKt7rVXF2Y-A28srvlJaR0Lst-P0Ukm0tKKUozmGuR5qbTtgC3vxgQ6SJj8yMD5T9gZowAKJBnlxv_FLpMk7Co_LsqM8q90_l-k800UmlgTZYaz9sWvvbBtxwiQTyA-qoF-xambBF9GvPLwVcQDSOpm20le4IequNk2IykvaHprxYXcwVqnG2k2-Vof-4ZQeG96PoWi3fXlkic_hPC1F3XGfHpwD7VNd03qXV0bGtWSYAUZjsNIvs4pIkC2WhK-RHCckhro684AWFD3NAm-KW7S_CwREOAU4BgIBpaOgOhT6DhCXjUSb56kblU04lCtNy7JqeMiPfdn0-xG06aZHYwFGekxOxvxWGK1mOqic-beQF12UKJBIr4cvHjS-DNnfhFOP-aNhkxIZ5ct_3gKnaFnc7zj2M3TtBi6n606TWUhUOtgy2FcGoCFwtsBooTV8-YLO6CKaYku8zBKJZ8iSn9HBhDTnDwE4jA1GDG4JBj43Zfx0wSEm_U_PlstqGD7FdM4vaMJ57hRgwSiqGJFD14ktersS1PWq1ftAAp_YGNkjCCz3gjpT3h0wH258pwgZ2Y0OeE6id3qNw_cEG--0=w1057-h789-no)

Nothing more can be done without my clearing this mountain of fabric...either back into its overstuffed basket or in two mail envelopes.

These are scraps ladies (not 1/2 a FQ), odd shapes and some very small so be prepared I shall be interested to see what you make from them (and anything over a half inch wide is usable even if only on a string quilt or applique landscape)

Thy time draws nigh Ladies...Prepare!!!

WOW !!! That was quick for parcel 2nd Class...Bravo, Royal Mail!!!

Glad you like them, there are some weeny triangles in there, in Oakshott Cottons (Drool) cut offs from Star cornerstones I have been making, If you can make something from those (and I'm thinking that would have to be with applique only)   I will be very impressed!! I'm still making them so you might get another small envelope full in a week or two!

You could make some mini quilts ala Paula Doyle ??

You are very talented Vege and patient!

I have indeed made a couple of bears (one was for my darling dad in the 90's...probably in the bin now he has died  :'( )
and a pusscat for the two lil neighbours when they were born and the obligatory dachshund but I found them  fiddly, tedious and a bit nyeh!

Isn't it strange how we all have our comfort zones and niches ??/

I just like trying different stuff... I make allsorts ,,,curtains, blinds, dresses, alterations if I have to, I do crafty stuff for my stall and the dolls for my great niece and DD best friends little girl and I'm venturing into the darkside with your BOM's and my first few quilts.. I'm thinking the bears would be good C*******s presents for my nieces with a little envelope with money in it

Is this bear very intricate to make?  I have some fabric left from the baby quilt I made and was thinking about having a go at a bear.  I did see this being made on the Sewing Quarter.  My hands are not good and I am losing my dexterity due to injury and multiple ops to sort it.  I wonder if I could make one.  :)

He's about 15cm tall I found the most fiddly bit was connecting the head to the body... I did consider doing it by hand as the seam is only about 3" long.... but on the whole making the bear is all pretty logical and I'm getting faster at them I've made 4 now
if your concerned you could print out the pattern a bit bigger

Thank you so much for posting that link - and the info as to where to find the pdf, I might not have found it otherwise!

It's my girls' big birthdays tomorrow and neither of them know what they want as pressies - other than glamping with their girl friends this weekend past and the party on Saturday.    So, they are getting money but wrapped up with a teddy bear.

Then I had a go at FMQ for the first time I drew a pattern using a roll of parcel tape to get the circles and worked more triangles around Imi's scraps of oakshott fabrics which I appliqued for the leaves (which measure 2"across the base and are 1" tall.). the background  fabric is shot silk dupion

This is the final picture ... I laid out all the red and Black scraps on a piece of curtain interlining and pinned into place I then appliqued the edges which were overlapped slightly the finished piece measures 12.5" x 21"and I shall cover a sketchbook with it probably

Those fabrics were from a Moda charm pack called Flying Colours!

I used it for the Cot quilt I donated to the Chettle Fetes tombola this July ...

These are the destructions Low ...pdf for pattern is just above where it says measurements
https://www.sewingquarter.com/h/58775bcc0a8e111270e056f5/Bear%20in%20a%20Bag/

having made a good few of these now the fiddliest bit is sewing head to body I find if your seams aren't 1/4 inch you may have to do a little surgery on the back of the neck which I cover with ribbon bow

Thank you so much Veggie :)
Had a close look at the instructions and it is far too complicated for me ( don't forget I can't follow a pattern as I only do p & q ) Also I couldn't print it off, but thanks anyway ... I'll enjoy looking at yours  :)

Ok I had a play  with the Moda Flying Colour  scraps and this is the result .. the little oblongs were 1 1/2 " by 2" and I cut them to squares I had 3 charms and a few 1" strips  and 3/4 strips of joined  cut offs  I used an oddment of old rose chintz lining and beige lining for the back... then I made them into a box bag
