Post by: HenriettaMaria on May 08, 2017, 12:09:06 PM
An acquaintance shared this http://collections.museumoflondon.org.uk/online/object/90816.html  (http://collections.museumoflondon.org.uk/online/object/90816.html)with me.  It's a find in the Museum of London.

I went to the Liberty's fabric exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum last year and saw examples of some exquisite smocked children's clothing.

I made a few hand-smocked dresses for my daughter when she was a baby - proper hand-smocked, not gathered then embroidered over  :)

It makes you wonder about the person who wore it doesn't it?  I really don't know how they did it in those days, tools were so primitive in comparison to what we have today and only candlelight to see by  :S

Lovely, probably done by some lowly embroiderer for someone wealthy. I tried smocking when my DD was little as I was 'into' embroidery at the time, the dress was hand smocked but I didn't do any more either then or since.
