Current Projects / Re: Ideas for scrap quilt designs
« on: February 16, 2024, 14:09:00 PM »
When I made 2 scrap quilts last year, I chose 1
x 12" block and 2 different  9" blocks for the darker quilt and 1 x 12" block and 2 different 8" blocks for the pale one. This meant that I could cut my dark scraps into 7 ¹/² " squares to be further cut for   the patches for both the 12" & 9" block. The lighter scraps were all cut into 6" squares for both the 12" & 8" blocks. The completed blocks were then placed together with orphan patches filling any gaps.

@Bill WHY on earth are you sewing 18 layers of denim fabric, this is not the way to go, you'll end up breaking it if you're not careful  :scream:

I'm not sure that there's a machine yet made that would be able to meet, and beat, the challenge that is Bill :[

I started playing around with an idea to use up a charm pack of Japanese style designs, then DS and his GF arrived. .. they've taken some of his stuff that's been in the attic for ages  and devoured a good chunk of the carrot cake that had just come out of the oven. I didn't actually get a stitch sewn  :boohoo:

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Brother CV3440 coverstitch
« on: February 04, 2024, 14:38:43 PM »
Mine's the CV3550, and I've only ever used it on knits, the only thing I found is necessary is that I tack up the hens with the tacking about 3/8” away from the intended hemming line. That, and cautious tweaking of the looper fine adjustment lever is all I've needed to do .

It should come with:
Bent nose tweasers, small hexagon ended screwdriver to change the needles, thread nets, small brush etc as in photo.

The only other thing I've bought is a book that I've found really useful.

I've had the 5 thread version of this machine for a few years now and had no problems with it at all. I went out to buy a Janome one, but the Brother came with the clear foot, (optional extra for Janome) and uses standard sewing machine needles, ( the Janome uses 'overlocker' needles) so I was persuaded.

As for not being used much in 2 years, it may be that the original owner hasn't sewn as much jersey/stretch fabric as she'd envisaged that she would.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: Help me with my Singer 14u12a

Do you have the manual for the machine? If not it's available on manuals.co.uk, pages 10/11 tell you how to set up the tension for both needle and loopers.

I just searched for Singer 14u12 manual.

Thanks to @Morgan for reminding me of Little Legs Fabrics at Scorton. I visited yesterday afternoon as it's not to far away from home.
It's speciality is jersey fabric, various weights, plain and printed, not just child-friendly designs, AND you can get your pdf patterns printed at A0 size for £2 per sheet. I'm not sure of their postage prices/service but the ladies were friendly and helpful and there's a choice of 3 tearooms, 2 garden centres to visit within a mile or so. I did leave with a length, or 4 of jersey but plenty left for another week.

I'll be on a fabric shop expedition this afternoon, DH has his AAA scan at a clinic in the general direction so, as I'm driving, we'll head a little further north in pursuit of fabric

I've been painting a piece of bondaweb - perhaps inspiration will strike when it's finally dried  ::thinks::

I'd sew it by hand, much less noticeable than machine stitching

I've been coverstitching hems on the 4 l/s tops that I made from the jersey bundle from Lamazi fabrics, that DH gave me for my birthday. They were all pinned, tacked and the sewn and pressed. Now to think about tea...

Patterns Discussion / Re: Zero Waste Patterns

I'd like to see how it moves, as well. I would expect it to twist a bit, with wear.

It'd be a devil to adjust to accommodate the extra length that we usually need to the  sleeves, body length.

I agree @Acorn @So Chic and @Bodgeitandscarper , years ago as a size 8 I'd have been able to wear boxy square-cut items, but now that I'm no longer underweight quite the opposite I need more shape to my clothes.

Perhaps a better improvement to fabric usage would be for patterns to have more accurate fabric requirements for the unaltered garment. I'm often able to add considerable length to sleeves/leg length/ neck to waist,  I'm 6' tall, without needing to buy extra fabric. Sewists of 'standard' stature must end up with a fair amount of excess fabric for each garment.
