For many years my mum did the ironing on the kitchen table using an old blanket covered with a piece of bed sheet. She was good at ironing and never really got used to using a 'proper' ironing board.  But you could always tell if she was the one who had ironed a shirt because it would have a neat crease going all the way down the centre back.

Still getting used to this site I put a pic up instead.

The screenshop only showed part of the URL.  The full link is:
https://www.lidl-ni.co.uk/en/p/home-comforts/tabletop-ironing-pad/p37535

@CraftyIrish  Dunno how to do it on a phone, but with the laptop to include a link I open that link in a separate tab.  Highlight and copy the URL (shown in the box at the top of the screen), go back to teh TSP page and past the link, highlight it again and copy (control and C on Windows, Command and C on Mac) then click on the "insert hyperlink" icon (which looks like a ball with a sheet of paper in front of it) and then paste (control and V or Command and V) into the pop-up box.  Make sure you leave the  "http://" highlighted so that when you paste it gets overwritten otherwise it will stay with the copied link and won't direct properly.

I can only do patchwork... and  :| we don't have old clothes.... That's my problem.

Instead of throwing the old clothes away, or to a charity shop, hang on to them!  Chop tehm up and make a patchwork cushion.

BTW, men's shirts can be pretty good for P&Q

Hmmmm!  There's probably a dark red in the mix too which is the cause of the problem.

I'm not sure that there's a lot that can be done other than repeated washings to make it fade a bit.  WHat other colours are included?  Does the pink look really wrong?

Technical Help / Re: Sewing stretch velour

I don't know.  You are the one that introduced an overlocker into the discussion.

No!  Bodgitandscarper mentioned an overlocker before I did.

My personal experience of trying to sew very stretchy fabrics with a regular machine, modernish or vintage, is that they don't like them, but also they often don't much like sewing a single layer.

Try reducing the pressure on the foot so that the fabric is less likely to stretch as it passes through, use a small zig zag, or the lightning stitch.  For sewing seams the 2 forward one back stretch stitch might be what works.

@BrendaP I’m on a tablet and can swipe the main photo in the link you posted to see the different coats. There may be an arrow to click on the sides of the photo to see these on a PC/Mac.

From the main link the other reviews come underneath.  On FB there are > and < arrows if there are other photos in the same posting.

And using it for stretchy velour?

However, from the first pic it looks as though your regular machine is struggling with staystitching on a single layer of fabric.  That's not an overlocker job, though a one needle chainstitch might be the answer to your problem, but £££

Ah, seems to be a private group, I can only find a couple of pics but I agree not good, and either the camera reversed the images or they are sewn the wrong way around.  Female garments have the buttonholes on the right.

The actual pattern might be OK, but that hi-lo hem in a coat doesn't work for me, and certainly not over a dress.  Maybe OK over trousers.

@Helen M, at this stage I will try anything.

@UttaRetch  I think that maybe you are discovering that modern stretch fabrics need a modern machine, ie an overlocker.  I know you are very much of the opinion that an overlocker is unneccessary as a regular machine can do everything, but can it?

I've been using it for topstitching but sewing from the back so as to show the chain stitching,

Stretch velour shouldn't need much, if any ironing, though some of it likes to roll like mad, but yours looks to be a double layer fabric so that's much less likely.

That's a lovely blouse.  I like that you managed to get the buttons in solid grey.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Question on quilting fabric qualities
« on: September 26, 2020, 21:15:18 PM »

I normally underline the fabric with chiffon which has really good electrostatic qualities and I'm in two minds about the polycotton. Are there any recent tests for polycotton that you could link @BrendaP ?
