A Good Yarn / Re: Cable Cardigan Finally Finished
« on: November 06, 2019, 11:50:31 AM »
@Ploshkin , that is a really beautiful cardigan.  Wish I could knit half as well.  Impressed that you were able to adjust the pattern for no seams - I really hate them too.

All those cables... mindboggling.  :S

A Good Yarn / 5 knitted UFO hats...
« on: November 05, 2019, 11:49:17 AM »
How did this happen?  I have no clue.  One day I just opened my knitting bag, and there they were.

I did finish one of the Foxy hats at the weekend - it only needed the buttons, but the rest need to be dealt with.

Firstly, I need to find the knitting row count for each one, so that I have an idea of where I left off.  I think I'll start with the other Foxy hat, as that is the last one I did.

Pictures as I go...  :S ;)

A Good Yarn / Re: Attaching a button band (French style)

Finished!  Just sewn the last button on, and safe to say, there won't be another.

It's not a nice or user friendly pattern, but I loved the style of it, and the cable rib.  It's also quite a bulky pattern, and would benefit from raglan, or grown on sleeves, and maybe picking up the stitches on the neckband.

So, here it is, the Cache Coeur for preemie, by Thalie Creations.

I managed to sew through my finger with an ordinary domestic Pfaff... it hurt... a lot!!  :S

Don't think I would be allowed an industrial, on health and safety grounds  ;)

Well, this is almost done - despite the instructions!

In the end I sewed the neckband on, as I just couldn't get my head around the back stitch finish with the bare stitches.

It all looks a bit bulky, even though it's 4ply, and I won't be using the pattern again.

I'll look for something similar, and use the cable rib pattern which looks very nice.

I've just got the button bands to do (as well as figuring out what to do with the non-button side of the band...)

Hopefully, it will be done today.

@Bodgeitandscarper , these are lovely tops, but I think, like @Greybird , I prefer the blue.

Times like these I think about embroidery machines... ;)

A Good Yarn / Re: Do you block your knitting?
« on: November 04, 2019, 10:12:59 AM »
Hmmm.  Pause for thought here.

I finished the Lil Rosebud dress for Lottie (it's miles too big), and I'm really not too happy with the finish, even after 'blocking' - in a fashion.

I used Patons acrylic 4ply yarn, and it was a garter stitch knit with two patterned side panels.

As you can see from the picture, it's not a good knit - even after pulling and stretching out while it was damp. It probably won't be worn much... :S

@pip , tbh, I think you really just need to put the hours in to get rid of the fear.  I remember getting my first O/L years and years ago (pre-Google :)) and it seemed an impossible task.

Gradually though, I became more daring, and found ways of using the machine which suited me best.  The manual too, shouldn't be ignored, it's full of helpful info (assuming it's a good translation!)

Good luck, look forward to seeing your progress.

Sewalongs and Competitions / Re: Stashbust in 2019

Afraid I've been awol for a while with a few health problems.  I haven't managed much, but all of it has been from my stash.

The latest make has been marinading first in the stash, then the scap bag, before being made into strip blocks.  These were left unused for some time, and then I decided they would make a great quilt/playmat.

None of this quilt is planned.  The strip blocks were put together in the order which fitted the size of the block.  The borders were strips cut for another project and lay unused until this project came up.  Backing was a piece of fabric which has been languishing in the stash for rather a while (impulse buy), and the lable was just a leftover, not so pretty, block.

The binding, was a piece of fabric which I bought to dress the swinging crib we bought when my DGD was born.  It's nice to see it in a quilt for her little girl.

A Good Yarn / Re: Granny square advice please
« on: November 04, 2019, 09:24:08 AM »
Well done for persevering with the crochet @sewingj !  Bella Coco videos are very good.

I wouldn't worry too much about yarn, I use Stylecraft a lot as I find it very soft, and reasonably priced.  I'm sensitive/allergic to wool, so always use acrylic.  I bought some very nice yarn in a local pound shop last week - three for two.

The beauty of crochet is that there are lots of patterns which use up small amounts of leftover yarn.  The granny square is perfect for beginners, and as you get more experienced you can add one or two fancier squares.

As the others have said, in the scheme of things, second chain/third chain won't be noticed.  My mum always used to say that a blind man on a horse would be glad to see it!

This has been on the go for quite some time, and didn't start out as a quilt at all.  I just wanted a way to use up lots of odd scraps.  Well, it used up the scraps, but left me with lots of scrappy blocks.  I've intended to do something with them for some time, but no ideas were forthcoming.

Several babies later, I decided to finish it for Teeny Tiny baby Lottie - mainly because I stupidly thought that most of the work was done...

It is very far from perfect, and the lable is very OTT, but my DGD will love it as it has Lottie's name on it.

All materials from the scrap bag/stash, so all it cost was my time.

Only began to think about the harmful nature of dyes while I have been reading World Without End - Medieval Novel, Ken Follet, and seeing a programme called a Stitch in Time.  Although neither mention the dangers of dying, it did make me think that it can't be an altogether safe procedure - even with 'natural' dyes, without protective clothing.

Never crossed my mind that modern dyes could be dangerous.

All this has been a great help, and I'm determined to get the finishing underway today - not much doing at work, so I'll take advantage... I couldn't begin yesterday as I fell asleep when I got home, got up, and went to bed!

@Missie, yes, I think we agree that the stitch count on the largest size is out, so, I'm going to unpick the back to the last armhole shaping, and take it from there.

@Greybird , that sounds exactly like the technique I found here: SpanishBackStitch I don't think I'll use it here, simply because I have never done it before, and I'm not sure I'll be able to do it neatly enough.  So, maybe cast off and sew on normally...

@Missie, re the neckband I have cast on 192 sts and worked 8 rows plus 1 knit row - I haven't gone nay further as I'm unsure how to finish it off.  I may just cast off loosely and stitch it on normally.

I thought I was ready to sew everything together, but I had to unpick the back, as it was too long to match the fronts...
