Yummy! BTW I got some of that biplanes and balloons fabric for £5 pm from Immanuels. It's a John Louden fabric. Immanuels may have some of it if you dig around their FB site.

No indeed one would never reveal one's weight though I fear it is proportional to the size of the stash although there's a bit less of me since the lockdown diet!
On the stash - well I have three large (but not, alas, mothproof) seagrass trunks, another cupboard and a couple of plastic boxes. I have been thinning out the stash and some will go to schools and other bits to charity shops when it is practicable. @TartanPaint some of the folks here are very disciplined and only buy what they need. Others, me included , suffer from a condition you may have heard of called SABLE (stash accummulation beyond life expectancy).  :D

Looks fab @Syrinx . And you've proved you don't need an overlocker... though they are handy.

Well it is certainly dramatic. Yes, Vogue patterns are very expensive in the UK now and we haven't had a half price pattern sale since before lockdown.  :'(

Sewing Machines / Re: Purchasing A Second Hand Machine
« on: July 20, 2020, 20:48:54 PM »
I buy a lot of fabric from eBay () but I wouldn't buy a sewing machine from eBay. I think I would only buy second hand if it was from a trusted friend. I definitely think it is always worth having the warranty. I agree with @Esme866 you don't need an electronic machine for dressmaking - although I would argue that you need a machine which does a one step buttonhole!

These clothes don't really appeal! If you are making your own clothes the Big 4 pattern companies mainly go up to size 22 but they have sime larger sizes. However Stylearc patterns all go up to size 30 so no need to go for a frilly sack. The more I use their patterns the more impressed I am with their fit and styling. They are really well drafted and properly graded between sizes.

Welcome. All my sewing machines (note the plural - many of us here have several machines  ) were bought in John Lewis and I've never had a problem. JL have machined on display but are not set up for demos though so you have to have a good idea of what you want. But that shouldn't be too much of a problem with all the information on t'intrernet.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Vogue US
« on: July 09, 2020, 21:26:18 PM »
Ummm errr - I did indulge in the recent Vogue sale. I'm still a member so $4.99 each was $3.99 each with the 20% reduction. At $3.99 each, 5 patterns were still well under £18 in value so this should be OK for avoiding customs charges. The postage to the UK has gone up a lot and is now $25 for purchases of under $25. My total purchase worked out at £37.50 - that's £7.50 per pattern so less than half price - I chose a mixture of summer and winter patterns.

I don't think buying patterns from the US site will be cost effective in future as they don't usually reduce patterns as much as this and the postage has gone up so much (it used to be $15 for 3 patterns but no longer). Apart from some of the Sewing Bee patterns, half price sales on the UK site seem to be a thing of the past, at least for now. Still, I'm not short of patterns so I can keep going for a few years at least.  0_0

Thanks for the heads up @wrenkins . I'm just firing up the winkelwagen now and it's raring to go!

Actually, of late, I've been somewhat profligate (even by my standards) on the Immanuels FB page (honestly, fabric at £2 pm- how could you not?) and on the Fabricguild site so I'd better leave the winkelwagen parked in the hangar, or wherever it is one parks one's winkelwagen.  0_0

The Haberdashery / Re: Most useful Bias Tape Maker?
« on: June 23, 2020, 16:34:51 PM »
Good on you peeps who manage to use these things. The one time I tried make bias tape with a gadget I got a stretchy mess! After that I put a pin on the ironing board and pulled the tape through with one hand while holding the iron in the other. Maybe I should have another go.
