Vintage Machines / Re: Singer Featherweight 221.
« on: June 19, 2019, 16:20:04 PM »
I've not used Phil Morton's in Macclesfield but I think he has serviced some of the machines in my textiles class and I seem to remember my textiles tutor though he was OK. I got my machine serviced in a local shop which had a visiting repair man for the day which I think possibly was Bob Green from Widnes. If it's not him then Bob Green from Widnes certainly gets good reviews and he is a mobile repair person so might be a possibility.

In the wardrobe / Re: Dressmaking for (Dummies) Beginners

I remember making a pair of trousers a few years ago. I was absolutely sure they would fit but they were too tight. So I used the same sort of solution by inserting a strip of fabric down the side of each leg.

Your Favourite Suppliers / Re: First time at Fabworks

Yes Fabworks is great, isn't it? Well worth frequent visits. I love going there. It's a short walk from the station though it's up hill.on the way back and I'm usually heavily laden by then. Their online shop is good too and it's genuinely next day delivery.

Yes I'm pretty much patterned up at the mo and am STILL waiting for a couple from the US Vogue site - they are being very slow...

Dolls and Toys / Re: Repairing my Teddy Bear

That reminds me, as a child I had a Merrythoughts bear called Pythagoras but I left him too close to the fire and his fur got singed so I don't think he'd be worth much now!

I've recently repaired a 41 year old bear - the one on my avatar's photo- and a 38 year old bear. The stitching on the bottom of the 41 year old honey bear was coming loose. It wasn't difficult to stitch this back so she's quite happy now and can enjoy her favourite hobby of sitting around waiting for honey sandwiches

Beryl, the 38 year old youngster, had velvet paws - basically velvet pads at the end of her legs. These had worn through to the extent that the little plastic beans in her legs were starting to escape! I cut two circles of brown fleece, just big enough to cover the old velvet paws, and stitched them on by hand. The virtue of fleece is that it doesn't fray at all.

I didn't take her apart and no anaesthetic was required - by either of us.

Yes, you need an overlocker. I've had mine for nearly 20 years...... I wonder if I need a new one.....  ;)

I ordered the pattern on 28th May and it hasn't arrived yet (though the post hasn't yet arrived  today). In the past, patterns have always arrived from them well within a week - except maybe during flash sales when they are clearly extra busy. It may say something about dispatch times on their website so would be worth querying if your delivery is longer than their advertised times.

I ordered a Kwiksew pattern from them a few days ago. I would have happily bought it at Jaycotts or Abakhan in person but the pattern is from the latest release and no one else has it yet. I think that's probably the only advantage of Sewdirect now - the fact that they get the new pattern releases before anyone else in the UK.

Spend £25 on the skirt @wrenkins. You don't want to compromise on quality!  :D

Yes it's a pity about Sew Direct. I stopped subscribing some years ago and only order from the website in one of their (now rare) flash sales. But there's no excuse for having the website so cr*ppy.
