Vintage Machines / Re: Clickety Click 66

Great buy Sewbusy.

I hope you don't feel the shameful pangs of guilt that I have only now pulling out my 201K after too many years. I think I'm going to be kicking myself for the wasted time, over a year of bag making on a little lightweight Pfaff (although he performed pretty well) when the Black Beauty was waiting his turn all the time.

I'll get hold of some Autosol and give that a try. They don't feel very rough so hopefully they won't need sanding. I'll bear that in mind though.

Thank you! :)

@BrendaP Your post has just arrived. I did spot Helen Howes' bobbins and will undoubtedly need more as I use Moon thread for bag linings and Tex 40 forthe outers. That uses up lots of bobbins so good to know her new ones work well for you.

At long last my Singer 201k is going to get all the use it deserves as a bag making machine after years at the bottom of the stash. Hand crank off (yes, will keep it safe), new motor bolted on so time for cleaning and oiling...

Any advice on the best stuff to clean up the metal bobbins? Most are just a bit dull and dark but a few have some marks.

I pondered going to the spring show at Duxford (but didn't) and it seems they were there! They've got the autumn show dates in their list so I get a second chance to drag DH with me.  :)

It's a couple of years since I last sewed chiffon and organza for dancewear. Both are sheers but sew very differently. Organza is so well behaved in comparison.

I finally found the thing that worked for me roll-hemming chiffon circular skirts was - to use a very narrow overlock rather than the roll-hemming - really can't tell the difference in wear but the most important bit was to trim the edge neatly and not use the knife so I could take a bigger bite of fabric. Lovely finish and no thread falling off even around the bias sections of the curved hems.

I never tried the ban-roll hem. It looks great but my hems all had curves.

I also used Best Press rather than starch as tended to over-spray, get all those white flakes and found the fabric still felt different even after soaking i cold water. May be different with a proper wash.

Yes, it's no problem to reset, I just thought it might be useful for our tech people to be aware.

Tech Know How / My theme keeps reverting to the default
« on: April 21, 2022, 21:43:47 PM »
I know how to reset it so no issue there but I thought it might be worth letting you know that this is at least the third if not fourth time it's defaulted back to Reseller. Certainly after each maintenance session.

I much prefer the Curve theme on my laptop - more efficient use of space, so I just reset it each time.

There are so many suppliers I'll include a list and comments on quality and range in the guide but just for now...

Hardware: Lots of places sell Prym (Empress Mills has a good selection as per Henrietta Maria's comment) and it's more economic for delivery charges if you can find hardware, fabrics and interfacing etc together. I started with Prym but they work out pretty expensive because it's nearly all packed singly and many things are always bought in pairs or more. Fortunately I've found some really good places subsequently that are usually my first stop now.

The best quality hardware by far that I've come across are by Emmaline. They're a Canadian company but Sew Hot have a good selection of Emmaline  and hardware by others too - all good quality. I think they probably have the biggest range of everything bagmaking in the UK including fabrics. Not bargain prices but all good stuff and not as expensive as Etsy. I really like their continuous zips by Serial Bagmakers and the matching SB sliders. The Serial Bagmakers home company site in Belgium has even more gorgeous stuff online but the delivery prices put it out of reach for me now as I obviously don't buy in bulk. Sew Hot also sell cork, the darling of bag makers these days but beware, they have lots of different types and what my hubby bought me for Christmas was not what either of us expected.

For budget hardware and zips which are reliable products that I often use myself and find perfectly satisfactory are from Bags of Difference and MeMadeMakes. The latter also has off brand interfacing and stabilisers which are worth a try too.

I also use Little Stitcher Sews for:
  • her thread (the only UK stockist I know of Amann Saba Tex 40 - stronger and thicker so a good aesthetic look on a bag which my domestic machine absolutely loves). I've used it in all my bags but many others use Moon quite happily.
  • lightweight waterproof canvas which is a big thing for linings just now and
  • her StittchFuse medium woven interfacing - not as smooth as the Vlieselene but I really like it, it's never exposed of course and it's cheaper! NB currently sold out but she's expecting more this month. I guess I'm not the only one who likes it.
She's recently changed to free delivery for everything which really suits me as I hated buying one new thread colour and then always hunting for something else to offset the delivery. That wasn't always easy as I've only put a small dent in my Immanuel's furnishing fabric and she has some very tempting fabrics too.  NB She's closed for Easter until the 20th so you've lots of time to browse.

I'll stop there though as there are so many places I could list and concentrate on trying to provide more detailed info in the guide.

Very happy to share some of the things I've picked up so far… and some of the things I struggle with because forewarned is forearmed!

I've got two deadline projects on the go right now but I'll think about what might be helpful while I'm sewing.

Probably fabrics, interfacing & stabilisers first as they're the building blocks and may influence construction (and budget!). They're also not the type we generally use in garment making that often or at all.

This is going be interesting to do and hopefully interesting & useful for you too.

A classic beach bag Acorn for the Côte d'Azur or Camber Sands. Beautifully lined, I like it!

I've got a pair of rope handles by Prym bought in a sale a couple of years ago that I'd forgotten about for some reason.

Great bag, and however much it costs, it's bound to be a lot cheaper than this one!

You're not wrong there @HenriettaMaria  but that one's great value in comparison to the Prada inspired bag I'm planning to make for my DGD's uni Christmas ball so I'll be saying that a lot then I dare say. Little bag made in nylon but half the price of the one in raffia!!!  :o

Gosh, I was thinking it looked a bit unconventional with the central hook & D rings on the straps...and I know where the stitching wobbles are!   :lipsrsealed:

You're all very kind but I've got to say it's a very accessible craft, especially for you vintage machine owners.  :)

It requires some reasonably accurate sewing (my clear foot with ¼", ⅛" & ⅜" guides is a real boon) but you can easily hack just a few patterns for lots of different looks. So you can just focus on a few to begin with.

Loads of really good free patterns and there's so much info out there about the way all the different types of stabilisers are used as well as various sources of support, not only from the bag making fb groups, but most pattern designers include a detailed video for each pattern and in addition many, many bag makers do their own tutorials/sewalongs including regular 'lives' where you can ask questions as they sew.

Would there be any interest in me putting together a guide to beginning bags from my own recent experiences? It's a big field these days and definitely not a cheap hobby with all the stuff that goes into a 'proper' bag but I've got my own notes on good tutorials, pattern designers (a huge number but some are particularly good for sewing on domestics rather than industrials) plus suppliers & price guides.

Just a thought…

Access All Accessories / A bag not for pickpockets!

It's the Guardian backpack by Linds Handmade Designs which keeps the pickpockets at bay by having the only opening on the side that sits against the wearer's back. My SIL has long been looking for this type in a modest size but most RTW seem to be on the big side.

Finally, it's not in that purple fabric unlike my previous 4 bags! This one is in a polyester (?) knit furnishing fabric (hurrah for Immanuel's again) with quilting cotton front & back while the lining is actually cotton with a bit of stretch that's been tamed with woven interfacing.

Soooo many changes most noticeably by adding a pocket to the front! Other changes included using removable backstraps rather than fixed, a removable pad for the optional shoulder strap, extra stabiliser in the sides, back and front and most of all (having seen how much people struggled with those side pieces in the online tutorials) I bound all the internal seams - not just the base. Finally I added a rigid separate drop-in base so the bag wouldn't touch the ground between the feet even with a bit of weight in it.

I'm still pretty new to bag making - this is my 5th in as many months but this pattern isn't an easy sew. Certainly mine isn't perfect by a long way but I think it's presentable enough to give her and I'm sure she'll forgive the odd wobbly stitching here and there.

The Red Herring pocket – a good place for smart water perhaps?

Couldn't get another pair of the wider snap hooks in time so ended up with unconventional D rings on the straps

May be a pain to flip the backstraps over the top every time to access that big zip opening (this is the shoulder strap in the photo) but there's great visibility of the contents when you do. And a bit of comfort for the old gals with bony shoulders... ;)

Extra rigidity added to the grab handle and below it to stop the bag slouching when lifted there and a close up of the terror of this pattern - the top of the side panels!

Dolls and Toys / Re: Sewing For Dolls
« on: March 25, 2022, 16:43:47 PM »
I'm afraid I've abandoned my doll clothes quite heartlessly for over 6 months while I've been obsessed with bag making.

You've done a stirling job representing the genre it has to be said.  :star: However, I have to make a rag doll for a friend's granddaughter very soon so I'll have to get back to that once the current bags are finished.

'Fraid so, but after our trip to the quilt show for more lining fabric, this will be its last outing for a little while at least. Other fabrics are queuing up now shouting "me next!". Choices! -<

This little bag was for a friend. It's the Beanie Baguette bag a brand new pattern by Spencer Ogg Patterns. Nice to sew apart from a demon curved zip. I unpicked it four times before I got the right combination of tricks and tips to get it to lie really smoothly without any waviness. If anyone fancies it, I'm happy to share them. Only problem was, after all that effort, I forgot to clip the bag curve and so it has a bit of a ripple. Fortunately, I don't think my friend will notice, she's too distracted by the Minnie Mouse zip slider and cat fabric inside. Also excellent techniques for new bag makers.

She's a big fan of Minnie. Personally, I prefer the Minions but it takes all sorts!  ;) 0_0

So pleased to have found a Minnie Mouse slider for her.  :D

The chevron striped webbing was a reasonable price and in the right width for this bag.
