The Show Must Go On / Re: Newest dresses
« on: September 28, 2019, 22:00:16 PM »
So very Flamenco. I love to see these traditional costumes with the purity of their classical lines.  :D

Makes such a nice change from all the bling of the ballroom (although I love that too).

And a very nice fit it is too.  :D

3 became 10  :|

That includes overlockers, coverstitch and 1940/50s vintage.

I decided not to go to Ally Pally this year and go to the Harrogate show as I've not seen that one before. Hoping to make it a few days away and drop into a few other Yorkshire shops before or after.

Sewing Machines / Re: Do I really need a back up sewing machine?
« on: September 17, 2019, 01:35:31 AM »
What I should do is sell or give away the extraneous unused stuff in this house, not buy more!

Oh boy, now that's something to aspire to! Good luck with that.  ;) :D

In your circumstances where waiting a week or two for a machine repair might be an annoyance but wouldn't be a significant problem, I'd say it's not worth it even at £99 (perhaps especially at £99) unless:
  • it has a useful feature/stitch/facility that your main machine doesn't have and which you've occasionally wished it did,
  • it handles heavyweight or lightweight fabrics better than your machine,
  • it is lighter and more transportable than your machine.

If it doesn't bring something extra that your machine doesn't have or isn't a significantly higher quality used machine than your current machine then it's just going to sit there and not be used which, if it's a computerised machine, may prove to be problem if you haven't used it for a year or so when you eventually come to need it. In the case of the used high quality machine, however, you may well find that your main machine soon becomes your backup machine.   0_0

If you don't already have an overlocker, buying one (as BrendaP suggests) is a really practical idea.

Sewing Machines / Re: Recommends Needed

This has a ‘box feed’. Not sure whether it equates to IDT or not.

From what I've heard from an owner, it is certainly an improved feed system but not as effective as the IDT on all fabrics.

Without the IDT I'd say the Bernina wins but, unlike the other brands who now have a similar device since Pfaff's patent expired (shame on you Bernina and Janome), they included it on many of their machines not just their most expensive models. So if you can find an older Pfaff (post 1968 when the 1222 model was released with it) you stand a good chance of it having the IDT.

Good luck.

Sewing Machines / Re: Do you name your sewing machines?
« on: September 14, 2019, 23:35:16 PM »
None of my current machines have a name really. I have 3 dressforms at home and although the first one was given a name by my DGD none of us can remember what it was now.

However, I recently bought an old mannequin and recovered her for my daughter to use for rhinestoning the dance dresses and she was instantly christened with no chance of forgetting. Dear old Tattiefaloll - a name my mum always used for anyone turning up to an event over-dressed or dripping in jewellery. I've no idea of the spelling but it seemed very appropriate for the purpose and makes my daughter & I smile in remembrance every time the name is used.

Publications / Re: What to keep?
« on: September 04, 2019, 22:45:53 PM »
I'd definitely suggest keeping the Aldrich & Bray pattern cutting books. Those are classics and even if you don't want to draft a pattern from scratch they can be invaluable to help you draft style alterations to a pattern that you've already fitted for your body.

I've even used one of Bray's old books that I'd bought years before and never used to make pattern adaptations for a ballroom dress a couple of years ago. It worked really well and since then I've often read them and got ideas for other dresses too.

Sewing Machines / Re: How many machines do you have?
« on: September 03, 2019, 16:45:07 PM »
I had one when I retired 5 years ago (a gorgeous wine coloured Viking 6570 bought new at the end of the 70s) then I used my retirement cheque to buy a computerised sewing machine and my first ever overlocker.

-- Pfaff Performance 5
-- Brother 4234D overlocker

The Viking didn't like the new company and promptly cracked her camstack in a huff making it beyond economic repair...and then the buying commenced. I've tried so hard just to write a simple list but the guilt complex won't let me without including some justifications.

-- Pfaff Select 3.2 (new from local dealer) a basic mechanical with IDT and light enough to carry!

-- Frister + Rossmann Cub 7 (Gumtree) bought as a gift for a friend wanting to learn to sew. Does that count?

-- Bernina 1020 (eBay) because I've always wondered what the fuss was about - I found out and loved it!

-- Bernina 1130 (eBay again) and with lots missing in a bit of a state but only £65 and in good working order. All the loveliness of the 1020 with some useful but unobtrusive computerisation.

-- Bernina 1130 (yep, eBay) this time fully complete with lots of extras. Now I had a backup if either blew its motherboard.

-- Juki MO-1000 overlocker (new from local quilt show) - my husband was finding hard to sleep with me hammering away on the Brother. Such a great machine (thinking I really should sell the Brother).

-- Bernina L220 coverstitch. (new at a different local dealer) No justification needed. Used a lot, the chainstitch just as much, if not more, than the coverstitch function.

-- Vintage Singer 201K hand crank (eBay) - definitely enabled by reading the love in The Sewing Forum's vintage group. Used very intermittently.

-- Vintage Singer 201K treadle & electric (eBay) - this time impressed by the vintage gang at The Sewing Place. Sadly not yet restored to working order (electrics burned out)

In my defence...I've not bought any machines for over 2 years! I just have a few eBay and Gumtree searches that I look at and then delete.

Your Favourite Suppliers / Re: Jaycotts - again

Very good delivery charges & great range of habby so they're very difficult to fault I've always thought (not that I want to). Even more difficult now they're adding fabric…

Fun with Fabric / Re: Fabric finds

@WildAtlanticWay  if you like African prints with a modern vibe, Urban Stax have some lovely examples. Some are specific sized pieces while others are sold by the yard. Not as cheap as africanfabs' cheapest range but some very interesting prints. They also ship internationally.

Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hello to all
« on: August 14, 2019, 18:55:54 PM »
Hi Skater's Mum
Welcome to TSP from me too. Don't be too surprised if you get asked about sewing skating dresses,  many of us knew a 'skatersmum' from a previous forum who makes skating costumes.

I hope you get lots of help and inspiration for your bags without too many suggestions for skating dresses.  ;) :D

Fun with Fabric / Re: Anyone used wool fabric from Fabworks?
« on: August 13, 2019, 22:12:31 PM »
That's just what I was hoping to hear. Happy to get some samples and see which feels good before I buy some to test out.

I'm hoping to get there in person towards the end of October too and will feel much happier taking another risk or three by then.

Thank you @sewmuchmore
