In the wardrobe / Re: Seven major looks for 2020
« on: January 14, 2020, 11:35:41 AM »
Well the Day-Glo colors Referred to as fluoro In the article are a lot of fun. I can see using those colors in a print or as an accent or an accessory but those colors would make my Olive skin really sallow!
How many of you remember the vinyl clothing of the 60s  in Day-Glo colors?
It is always interesting to see how couture looks are translated into ready to wear.
Those bucket hats belong in a bucket! There is  nothing attractive about them. I think the rope belt done in lovely light upholstery braid would be a lot of fun. My father was in the Coast Guard auxiliary and he taught me about tying knots. When macramé was popular he was really good at it!
I’m not too thrilled with disco collars. Collars and cuffs became really exaggerated in the late 60s early 70s and I don’t think I like that throwback look.
Thank you @UttaRetch for the peak at the second coming of the Roaring 20s.
Actually I expected to see more of a Gatsby look in clothing this decade and a nod to art deco art nouveau but we’re not seeing that!

@fajita Hermes scarves are ( or were) painstakingly hemmed by hand by French nuns.
And if I had any French nuns around in my tropical paradise, well...

Baja Susana has entered the contest!
This is my entry #1. I may enter a second item.I just accepted an offer on my house and may not have time to sew anything else.
The pattern is Lutterloh supplement 315 pattern 125 from the most recent release.

I am also showing off my label sewn into the side of the contrast trim.
It is a duster length  vest with a gathered blouson waist and contrast trim. It also is pictured with patch pockets. I did not like the look of the pockets , so I left them off.
The main purple and black "cheetah" print is a poly chiffon. The contrast trim ois a cotton Lycra knit. I chose it because it would give a crisper finish and keep the vest from looking like a sack.
Here are views of the finished garment that is perfect for wearing with jeans . The vest ups the style of the jeans but is not heavy and stiff for shopping. (note:Sears is a high end store here)

And with a change of clothes to elegant black and the addition of a scarf this vest becomes  high style and ready for cocktails at 8:00.

The bodice and skirt are both gathered and with the addition of a belt  it becomes a blouson. This is not my favorite look. But I have shown it above belted to illustrate the blouson effect.
Here are a back and  side view to show the gathers.

I basted all of the seams and then used a four thread overlock stitch on my serger. To finish the armholes, hem and scarf I used a narrow rolled hem. Since I did not have any French nuns around to hand stitch the hems, I used the rolled hem foot on my sewing machine to finish the armholes, hem and scarf. Once you master this technique it is so much fun to do. This is a more professional and higher end finish than a rolled hem on a serger. Here is an image of the vest armhole and a closeup of the stitching. And I would have lost time liberating the nuns from their  heavy, hot habits, and sticking them in bikinis and teaching them to surf!

I am very pleased with this garment. I am going to a fancy fundraiser for our dog rescue and I shall wear it.
I really had no issues with this  project. The polychiffon could have been a nightmare, but it was very cooperative.
This appears to be a simple garment, but it took a lot of time. I sewed slowly to keep the fabric under control.
I uses the straight stitch needle plate on my machine. that eliminated the machine gobbling up the fabric at the start of a seam.
I hope that you like my vest as well as I!

Here is my fabric with the pattern photo. Some of the cheetah spots are purple. The contrast will be black. This is a Lutterloh from the latest supplement. I have already drafted the pattern.

5
@Ann those are lovely fabrics!

6
That basic blouse with few design lines will work wonderfully with your print!

7
I have the fabric for a dress and the pattern work is done. I shall cut on January 2!
My job on January 1 is to put away Christmas and then organize my fabric cupboard.
I have more of the black and white animal print velvet for a dress and some wonderful flamingo print cotton for  a blouse or pajamas! Still mulling that one!

8
Manuela!
Theses are both good contests. And muni wardrobes are always fun.

In the wardrobe / Re: Black? What was I thinking?

I am late to this discussion, but!
I love black. I love slinky black dresses and shape showing black tops and classic black pants. I have vision issues and still I saw on black.
Just yesterday I bought some black stretch velvet and some black cotton Lycra knit.
When I sell on black I use dark red or dark purple thread. That way I can see where I’m going see where I’ve been and see what I need to rip out. If there’s topstitching to be done then I pull out my trusty O foot which is the quarter inch foot and I call it my oxygen foot because it keeps me breathing well and not screaming. Top stitching or any visible stitching will be done in black otherwise all seems are done in red or purple and then it does not show through. Try that next time you’re possessed to see with black!

My ideas
1. Black and white contest
2. Denim but no jeans or jeans jackets
3. Four piece wardrobe with  mix and match pieces
4. Upcycle/recycle
5. Accessories
6. Jackets/ coats

Here are my pink linen shorts made from the same pattern. I have not even worn them until this moment.
I am continuing to lose weight, so i will not have a perfect Fit, but I am pleased with these.

Back

The top is a Lutterloh top with princess seams and a Dior dart.

Okay! I am at the PC and I can upload my photos. These are after two days of  wearing and a lot of sitting around this is how they look!

And here is a composite. The top is a Pamela's Patterns perfect tee in lace, the tank is Pamela's in pink. The pants are loose in front as well because of being worn twice and sitting in a meeting for 2.5 hours.
They have been laundered and I shall wear them today and take nice photos of crisply ironed Capris!

I have pink pants cut out, pink shorts almost done  and I am going to make some black with the same basic Hollywood waist and one with Sarah's trouser adaptation of slant pockets and fly front.
I always make all three lengths in the same color and then tops to mix and match.

We have a hurricane (small) threatening us right now. I want to cram in as much sewing as I can before we batten down which means all patio furniture is packed into my sewing room! The sewing room was designed to handle this mess. But no room then for sewing. But if the power goes out, no sewing anyway.
The generator could handle the sewing room and AC, but I would feel very selfish using it for that!

Here are my completed pink linens Capris made from the Eureka Pants That Fit project! This is after sitting in them for 2.5 hours!
They are kind with a fine almost batiste cotton.
I lost weight during the process and had to take them in 2.75" .
I will post again with a better unstretched backview.

Looks like I will have to,post f of my PC a little later

Feeling virtuous because I made separate patterns for shorts, Capris and pants. I preserved my tissue pattern. And my working velum is also folded and put away. Today I shall start with pink linen bottoms. Then white, then black.
I shall try to complete something today and post it here.
I had to keep going because I paid Sarah for her time. And my pants and shorts are not only showing wear, but they are TOO BIG!
