This exhibition looks great. I remember riding my motorbike from Deepest Darkest Dorset to go to Biba, it must have been around 1973. The most amazing place.

Museum of English Rural Life  has a new exhibition. I've seen a few sewing machines in there but had no idea they have a huge collection. https://merl.reading.ac.uk/blog/2023/01/an-introduction-to-the-barnett-project/

The Haberdashery / Open end zip replacement
« on: October 20, 2023, 16:34:06 PM »
DD has bought a maternity parka from Vinted. They're £200 new but she got it for £30 because one of the (many) zip ends has come off.  I need to get the same make of zip because there's an extra centre piece that zips onto the 2 outsides to allow for 9 month bump, then this is flipped upside down for baby wearing later, or it can be worn without the insert. The zip puller is round with YBS on it. Please can someone point me at a supplier? @Sandra ? Jaycotts and Zipperstation don't have any that look like this.

Vintage Machines / What is this?
« on: May 29, 2023, 19:07:15 PM »
This has just been offered to me (free)! As I asked nicely and commented that I'd enjoy fitting it into a base. Apparently everyone else who's asked for it hasn't realised it's not usable as is  ><. I didn't pay much attention as didn't expect to be offered it; I was about the 10th. Now I've looked more closely at the photo I don't recognise the decals. I'm now wondering whether it's a copy, in which case I won't bother spending out on a base.

Patterns Discussion / Bernina free sweatshirt pattern
« on: February 07, 2023, 21:24:36 PM »
I just received an email offering this https://www.bernina.com/en-GB/Campaigns-en-GB/Kalender-2020-inspiration-Magazin/Redirect-free-pattern/Free-pattern-even

In return for signing up to their newsletter. There's also an embroidery file for a hummingbird but don't know whether the formats on offer will suit all machines.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Bad designs on Emblibrary
« on: January 30, 2023, 18:55:24 PM »
I bought a design for ITH trivet/coaster thing. I've done a few ITH designs so I know how it works. I cut out all my applique bits to size as traced from the DL template, and stuck them to Insulbright, I stitched the DL file onto stabiliser as per instructions, with no fabric backing then positioned my fabric & insulbright over the stitched outline. Started the embroidery file & the 2 didn't line up! Luckily I was going slowly & carefully, not on auto. I carefully repositioned so that they matched up & started stitching. I expected a tack down but got a repeat of the outline (DL) which missed several edges. It also does a cut& jumpstitch TWICE on each of 10 applique pieces. I let it continue in case it comes out OK but I can now say that my friend won't be getting this coaster for her birthday.  The file was only 76p but would have been attractive if it had been properly designed.    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  how annoying as Emblibrary/Urban Threads are usually very good.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Urban threads site down?
« on: November 07, 2022, 17:46:28 PM »
I haven't been to this site on a while and it seems while my back was turned it's amalgamated with Embroidered Library? Same font.. anyway, it said I had to make a new password, which I did, but I now can't log in. Is it a temporary problem? Anyone else having problems?

A bit of a 'do' / Help please! Shortening prom dress
« on: June 28, 2022, 15:17:56 PM »
Polyester/Lycra fishtail dress. Ruched across tummy from LHS. Step grandaughter wants the fishtail cut off. I've marked it & am about to cut...... because it's double layered (self lined) I was hoping to undo a bit of seam inside then overlock from the inside. However, I've just looked properly and the panels are made of double layers but stitched all the way along the seams so that wont work. What would the pros do @Sandra ? Anyone? Should I just cut then turn each layer & stitch together? Can I get away with machining or will I have to hand stitch?   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  Suggestions welcome!

Patterns Discussion / Retrieving Stylarc patterns
« on: March 26, 2022, 22:40:24 PM »
I'm trying to log in to Stylarc to download my patterns. When I ask to reset the password I get an error 404 as if it doesn't recognise my email address. I'm a bit annoyed as I have a few patterns I've bought & it seems the website has changed & I've lost them. Any suggestions? The help tab doesn't, there's no 'contact us'.

I'm about to cut out a sweatshirt for DH. He wants deep pockets which his phone won't fall out of, ideally like a kangaroo pocket but INSIDE. I've drafted a pattern piece for this, but it'll have to be stitched onto the front, obviously, so the stitching line will show on the outside.  Is this the only drawback? Should I refuse & make in-seam pockets then put up with the moans about phone falling out? Put velcro on the pocket edge? (Last time I did this the hooked side kept pulling threads when it stuck to the wrong place). I have some very nice marble pattern French Terry which I don't want to mess up. Any suggestions welcome.

In the wardrobe / 1970s disco wear suggestions please
« on: December 03, 2021, 18:20:04 PM »
We have a murder mystery pack for Boxing Day. I can make a pair of Loons for DH, and possibly a skinny t shirt although he's no longer skinny. I've found my 1974 platform boots but I can't get my feet in them so that's Plan A out the window. I still have a long Indian print circle skirt though the waist seems to have shrunk  ><. The brief is 'Disco' so I'm thinking Abba style,  I'll be more Julie Walters than Meryl Streep. What fabric? Shiny/ sequinned? I didn't wear minis then & I'm certainly not going to now, it'll have to be trousers & top. Suggestions please.

Embroidery and Embellishment / What's this sticky fluffy stuff?
« on: October 19, 2021, 21:53:44 PM »
I've had my machine (Pfaff Creative 3) for ages. I've just (re) discovered this pack which came with the embroidery module. There are clips, which I think I've finally worked out fit on the hoop like this:  though I'm not sure why I'd need them? And this slightly sticky, fluffy stuff which looks a bit like thick stabiliser but which is cut to fit over the large hoop.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  Does anyone have any idea what it's for? I wondered whether it was to cushion the edges of delicate fabric when hooping?
