Tech Know How / Unread Topics List much shorter than before
« on: April 11, 2023, 09:44:40 AM »
Not sure exactly how to describe this but until now if I press 'unread topics' I get a full page and sometimes even more as I don't read all sections of the board everyday, and sometimes there are unread topics from several days ago. I will often dip it to them if something catches my eye a few days later.

As of, I think, last Wednesday or Thursday I now am lucky to get half a page and they only go back as far as the previous day at most.

Has something changed on the board or is it my settings? I haven't changed anything at my end though and it's the same if I use my Samsung tablet.

Anyone else seeing the same change?

I always choose the single size as you get the size either side as a separate download and I'm at the smaller size end so wouldn't need the bigger ones, but am wondering should I choose the 'multi size'?

Am thinking about the Cora shorts, an Instagram post drew me to them I don't have a shorts pattern and it's looks easy and doesn't use much fabric. The shape looks flattering too.

Which do you use if you buy Style Arc?

Technical Help / Drag Lines On Sleeves - Help Please!
« on: July 25, 2022, 19:40:45 PM »
I'm sewing up the Spring Dress which is a Nina Lee pattern that came with I think Simply Sewing last year. I have lengthend both tiers and it looks good apart from the long sleeves. I should have done a toile for the bodice but decided to just jump in and see what happened.

I'm narrow shouldered and narrower across the shoulder front going down probably almost as far as the under arm. I went ahead and tacked in sleeves but of course shoulders were too wide so undid one and narrowed bodice and re attached sleeve. I did not alter sleeve piece at all.

I have 'drag' lines similar to the photo of dress from magazine which of course I did not notice before........

So should I have altered the sleeve at the front? Back seems to be okay by the way. There are fewer drag lines on the side that has not been altered but of course bodice has not been altered.

Looking more closely at the plain fabric version the shoulder do seem to be slightly extended so have I taken them too far? There is 5/8" seam allowance so a bit of leeway.

I have a good half metre of fabric left so I could if necessary cut out bodice again, would prefer not to as I've already attached the neckband which was a bit fiddly. I guess I could cut out new sleeves but not both of them. I'm not using the frill on sleeve.

Any help gratefully received!

Rainbow fabrics summer sale started tonight and there is 40% off everything with code SALE40.

Their prices are pretty reasonable to start with and priced by the metre. If nothing else fabric is good for toiles that could be wearable!

9

Having read a post on Instagram about using a washaway stabiliser for buttonholes on garments I'm wondering if anyone has used this on embroidery and if so where do you get it from?

The post I read was from France and the corresponding item was much more expensive on Amazon UK than Amazon Fr. I also don't think I need as so much of it.

Any info gratefully received!

I know we are all trying to destash BUT I saw this on my Instagram 'stories' this lunchtime and thought I'd post a 'heads up'.

One of the owner's deadstock suppliers is closing but has given him a load of jersey knit fabrics at a very good price and he will be posting them on his site tomorrow for probably around £4 a metre. He showed a few and they do look nice. I've bought some viscoses that were Nobody's Child deadstock and they were lovely.

It usually kicks off at 6pm and it's best to get in fairly quick if you're interested! https://www.rainbowfabrics.co.uk/

I'll update if I see anything further.

Just to add these new fabrics won't show until after 6pm if that is the time he's going live with them.

Publications / Threads magazine does anyone still buy or subscribe?
« on: December 31, 2021, 13:01:16 PM »
Does anyone still subscribe or buy Threads? I once had an 'insider' membership and a subscription which was a gift so still get some emails from them which I usually delete straightaway. One caught my eye recently though but the article seems to be in the magazine rather than an 'Insider' one.

I was wondering if anyone had read the 'Winter' edition, which is I think the current one, as there is an article about making a 'Crotch Template' by Joi Mahon. The email I have takes allows me to read part of it but not all and I wondered if anyone had read it and thought it would be of use. It sounds like it could be a good idea as you could see straight off if the pattern pieces needed an alteration.

I'm also wondering if you can order just a single copy in the UK as I've not seen it even in larger WH Smith for years now. The email offers a 14 day free trial but I'm wary of signing up as they seem to take payment very early so would it actually be free?

Style Arc have their usual Christmas sale with 30% off PDF patterns until 30 December.

Code is :- pdfholidaysew30

Can't decide whether to get the Emerson dress or not as I've seen a couple of hacks on Instagram.

Technical Help / Poor buttonholes on Janome machines?
« on: December 14, 2021, 11:29:45 AM »
I've only ever done buttonholes (automatic) on Janome machines and not many for a long time until this year and to be honest they were okay on the fabric I was using, but have just read a post on Instagram from @good_fabric_store and wondered if anyone else has done similar things.

They say that the first buttonhole is fine, ie on a scrap of same fabric, then the 2nd one, ie first on garment is a mess. Remedies include switching back to a straight stitch and sewing on a scrap then going back to buttonholes and someone else has said switching off the power and back between each buttonhole has a similar effect.

The opening poster says hers is a basic model but the switching off of the power suggests to me that it's a computerised model as the memory will have been erased by doing that.

One person says they bought a new machine (Pfaff) and they are so much better.

Not saying I'd go to that extreme but thought it interesting.

Has anyone else had similar issues?
