For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Re: Singer collection
« on: June 11, 2022, 15:25:16 PM »
I managed to get some free time so took the opportunity to go and pick them up. I will photograph each one separately and give a description as per my brothers notes.
First up 221k.
Notes. Fully stripped and rebuilt. Motor(s) stripped and rebuilt. Internally rewired and capacitor removed. New brushes fitted. Correctly lubed with Singer grease. Both motors are very smooth and will allow one stitch at a time. Machine: Fully rewired. Capacitor removed. Timing set. Lithium grease on gears. LED bulb fitted that does not get hot. Pedal: Stripped, rewired and rebuilt. Any carbon disks that were damaged have been replaced.
Manufactured Sept 4th 1953.

15k. My machine that I personally liked above all others. I didn't get time to fit a new belt but there will be one amongst the spares somewhere along with a full complement of presser feet.
Machine: Stripped and rebuilt. New internal wiring for the lamp. Motor stripped and rebuilt, greased correctly and new brushes fitted. LED lightbulb fitted. Gears lubed with lithuim grease. Timing set and other than the belt it is ready to go. Anyone wanting to try freehand this is the machine to use. Pedal: Completely sanded down and stripped. Repainted with 3 x base coats rubbed down and 4 x black enamel. Very nice finish. Internals stripped and carbon disks replaced if any were damaged. A very very smooth machine that is a joy to use.

201k Notes. This is a stunner! Once again I took the time to fully strip and rebuild. All Internal wiring has been renewed and everything is in absolutely stunning condition. This machine is so quiet and smooth it is a joy to use. I left the leather in place as a guide to its sewing potential.
Motor stripped and rebuilt, new brushes fitted, lubed with Singer motor grease. Foot pedal stripped and rebuild with new carbon disks replacing any damaged ones. Main machine has been set up with timing done and everything lubed with Singer oil and lithium grease on the gears. It comes with the original extension table and a  complement of presser feet. Instruction manuals also included that are in excellent condition.

That is all for today. There is still a 99k and the dreaded 185k still to go as well as all the spares!

Jim

99k Now added. Notes. This was originally a knee operated machine but the control unit had failed so I changed it to a foot pedal unit. It is a lovely machine that is capable of light to medium leather work and is smooth and quiet. Motor stripped cleaned and rebuilt, new brushes fitted. Foot pedal, stripped, rewired and damaged carbon disks replaced.
No light on this one, I never got round to fitting one. Timing done and all lubricated correctly.

So there is just the 185k to photograph, should I bother? The spares too. Lots of presser feet, a couple of spare motors, a foot pedal that is attached to a motor that he used for testing so no doubt that one has been stripped and rebuilt too.

Price. I am no expert in this field but I think for the whole lot £500 is reasonable? What do you think?

Thanks all.
Jim

Firstly let me apologise for not responding to PM's received. A lot has happened over the last 2 years for all of us.
I hope that the pandemic did not hit you personally and you all came through the hard times unscathed.

I will be collecting my late brothers machines from his daughters on Sunday. I wonder if there would be any possibility of selling them as a job lot?
99k 15k 201k 221k all restored. I will take photographs and upload them here with the list of pedals and spares...god the spares! More presser feet than I can count and I have no idea what most are!!
He has left a detailed inventory of each machine and pedal and none have been used since his passing.

Wishing you all well
Jim

This is going to take me weeks to sort out having absolutely no experience of sewing at all so please bear with me whilst we work out how to upload photographs and videos. We also have the challenge of working out what the hundreds of attachments are for. These were all my late brothers machines. All were lovingly restored. He has left detailed instructions on what has been done to each machine. The 185k open to donation to the sewing place even if it is £1. Apparently he hated it and would have burn't it. He didn't though.. His machine was the 15k. Better than any 201k due to it's bobbin feed...? So here is a list of machines... PM me and I will do my best to upload pictures etc.
221k.
2x 201k
99k
185k £1 or more donation to the forum. Must collect though (Leeds)

Vintage Machines / Time to let them go.
« on: March 18, 2020, 23:00:42 PM »
It's taken a while but, now is the time for my late brothers machines to find new homes. Both his daughters have vintage 222k's lovingly restored and they would like the remainder of the collection to go to those who would enjoy and cherish them. There is also a wealth of spares bits, for what we have no idea! He didn't have time to sort things out fully toward the end.
He did make full listings for the work etc carried out on each machine and was proud to have restored them to their former glory and spared no expense nor time in doing so. He did not however leave a list of dates of manufacture or the name of the foot??? There are lots of them! Some boxed up, some loose.
All his machines are old Singer. There is a 221k, 2x 201k, 15k, 185k, 99k. Most have boxes of feet, instructions, manuals..
It's going to take me a while to research all of this but interested parties please feel free to contact me via PM on this account.
Wishing you all keep safe and well during this troubling time.

Hi. I am replying on my late brothers behalf Barny (Bernard was his real name but we all called him Barny). He sadly passed away on Thursday following a long and hard fight against prostate cancer. Right now we are unsure what to do as I know he was looking to pass on his collection of sewing machines and in fact left notification that they must go to good homes and not be sold on Ebay. If it were not for the fact he (we) received a PM today we would not have been able to access his account as we did not know about his last message on here.
As we and his daughters come to terms with losing him we wil in time try to update you on what his daughters want to do with the machines and if they wish to pass them on then I shall do my very best to send them to good homes within this community.
For now though whilst we come to terms with our loss we would appreciate it if offers were not made. This may sound rude but we are just harbouring his daughters.

Kindest Regards
Jim Davies

Vintage Machines / It's time to let them go

:( Well the big old fight has come to the final round and I am down on points... So I have decided it is time my collection moves on to people who may enjoy them whilst I am still able to do this.
This is just a tentative post and I know I have not been here for some time for obvious reasons but other than you good people I do not know who would appreciate them more.

I have a 221k, 2x 201k, 1 x 185k and my favourite 15k that need to find new loving homes. There are also tins of presser feet and various other related items that need to go also.

So if anyone is looking for a vintage machine that has been lovingly restored and is both mechanically and electrically in superb order then just drop me a PM.

Ask your repair guy to give you the old pedal back. All of the parts are worth keeping hold of. If my fuddled memory serves me right the control unit works on 2 carbon tracks that provide the resistance and current flow to the motor. These do eventually wear out as do the contact brushes. If it is the track(s) that is worn it can be fettled by carefully removing a small part of the track and realigning it to a new part of unworn track. It sounds complex but it isn't. The Nova 900 has the same system I beleive and I have repaired a few of these and saved a packet on not buying new foot controllers.

Vintage Machines / Re: fixing a belt
« on: January 17, 2018, 23:38:05 PM »
It may be the belt tension but I do not see how this can alter if left unused. A more likely scenario is the machine has "dried" through not beign used. Give it a clean and a lube and I would bet it runs just fine. The whine you hear is the motor, it is trying to overcome the friction caused by sticky gears, rods, armatures, bushings and basically anything that moves horizontally or vertically. Clean and lube, leave to rest for a few hours and then try again.

Thats fantastic news! Happy to hear it is now all sorted and running as it should. If I can help in the future please feel free to ask. Having said that the gears do look a little devoid of lubricant...

The black feed from the light on the machine end is in the middle. Light needs to be on pins 1 and 3. Sorry for my tardy response, today has bit a bit of a crud one.  :x

Vintage Machines / Re: Cleaning VSMs: Tips, Tricks & Tools
« on: January 15, 2018, 19:07:19 PM »
Hi all,
We get a fair few queries about cleaning up old, older, venerable and ancient sewing machines, treadles and cabinets...
So I thought I’d start a thread to collect everyone’s thoughts.

I’m looking for any hints or tips, strategies, links to blogs you find helpful or inspiring and your favourite tools and doodads or cleaning/polishing helpfuls. The goal is to give any aspiring sewing machine fancier a good place to start and give us all somewhere to refer queries to and exchange ideas.

I’ll go away and organise my thoughts....

For cleaning up the mechanical side of things Roger, Singer sewing machine oil, Q tips, White spirit and a very useful tool I made. It's a waxing stick with the barbed bit of velcro glued to it. I then can add cotton wool buds and get into those hard to reach places with ease and both lubricate and clean old fluff out. I could go on for hours! There is simply nothing better than getting a dog of machine and restoring it to a fully working one.  :D

Vintage Machines / Re: Bernina 530-2 ornamental stich lever not moving
« on: January 15, 2018, 18:28:38 PM »
Q tips, white spirit and patience. The white spirit will dissolve the dried up oil and allow the movement to break free. It may take several attempts and a day or two but it works. I had a Brother machine that was so gunked up that nothing moved. A few days cleaning and it eventually ran perfectly. The main thing is not to force anything. This could easily result on bent actuators , broken return springs or damaged cams. Take your time and treat it with love and it will reply in kind, treat it badly and it will just break.

Both the mains and foot unit wiring are 2 core as arrow said they are double insulated. If you intend to replace them then you will need a soldering iron as the pins in the machine plug are soldered and not screw fittings as found in vintage Singers. It's not a difficult job for a half competent sparky to do and he will will also advise on suitable cable replacements.

Hope you have it up and running soon!

Hi Acorn. The slotted brass connectors are a right pain in the bum to remove on the machine side. Why Singer chose this option is a mystery? Anyhow. One question, has the pedal/mains side been rewired? Does the cable look quite new? The only reason I ask is that I have seen machines reverse wired. Whilst this doesnt really make any difference to the machine running it does pose a challenge in diagnosing. The correct wiring for 221k is, and this is looking at the machine with the from the rear (take the bottom cove off): Left to right 3 pin arrangement far left being pin 1. Motor  pins 1 and 2 (doesnt matter if these are either way round), Lamp, pins 1 and 3.

Hope this helps!!

Barny
