Prepping for Christmas parties, New Year's Eve and more with this formal/glitzy/fancy outfit competition. Sew a garment worthy of a festive fiesta!
Introduction
In this competition you can produce any type of sewn garment. For example: dresses, jackets, skirts, trousers, shirts etc. The only rule I'm going to put in place on it is that it must have a formal or sparkly or otherwise occasion-wear feel. That's a bit of a loose rule, so make your own mind on whether it fits in. E.g, it might be a nice glitzy t-shirt to wear to a work do or it might be a ball gown! But please nothing that is just an every day sort of garment.
Dates
The competition will run from Saturday 11th November - Sunday 10th December. You have until 23.59 on the 10th to complete.
Rules
Your garment must include some element that we can consider as "winter glitz". That doesn't mean it has to have sparkles, it's a more loose meaning of getting dressed up for something special. Even if it's just a festive night out at the pub, but of course we'd encourage you to use this opportunity to make some gorgeous outfits! Please be reasonable in your selection so as to be fair to your other sewalong participants.
Your item must be sewn. No knitted garments or upcycles.
You MUST NOT cut your fabric until 11th November. You may construct a toile prior to cutting your fabric.
You must post at least 5 times in this thread to qualify. Please be involved and post updates! However posts in-thread do not constitute your entry. They are simply for enjoyment and participation. You will need to submit your project as below.
You must submit THREE pictures; one of your uncut materials, one of mid-construction, one of the finished item as a whole. (These pics needs to be submitted at the end, so they don't have to be posted in-thread unless you want to share).
How To Enter
Please send your finished make pictures (three required, as above) to sewalongs@thesewingplace.org.uk by the deadline, along with a title and short description of the project and how it went (no more than about 300 words please).
How To Win
Winners will be chosen by public vote.
Prizes
All winners receive a very special TSP Winners badge and forum badge. Runners-up will receive a special virtual forum badge.

It just so happens that I was going to suggest the very same idea for a sewalong. Still not sewing, but hope that people will give this a go.
-
Should I be ashamed my life is so boring I have no need of winter glitz or for that matter any other type of glitz. |O
Looking forward to seeing what those with more exciting lives produce
-
I'm still considering entering this one (I won't officially enter just play along). Not sure whether to though, I have so many other things I want to sew that are not remotely glitzy. But I've really really wanted a tartan 50s dress for Christmas for soooo long so I might make that. I'll wear it on Christmas morning (and then we switch to comfies after dinner).
-
I've just ordered this https://www.myfabrics.co.uk/81-poso-f17-018_lurex-checks-jacket-fabric-turquoise.html (https://www.myfabrics.co.uk/81-poso-f17-018_lurex-checks-jacket-fabric-turquoise.html) which is definitely glitzy - all the red bits have lurex in (maybe the pic below of the sample shows it a bit?) It's going to be a coat though, so will it be eligible for this, with all its glittery bits?
Edit - better add that pic!
-
Don't see why not! Love the sparkly threads
-
Don't see why not! Love the sparkly threads
Good job I've got til the 11th to get other stuff sewn!
-
I have some red tartan flannel PJs with glittery threads in them ...Love 'em!!
-
Ok, it's past the 11th November, time to make a start on this :)
I have yet to decide on the pattern for my sparkly tartan, and which lining fabric, I think the blue rather than the red, and I think V1494 on the right, but not sure yet!
-
I've found a bunch of harris tweed in a box that I was struggling to think of something for. Might have a chat with my sailor friend and see if we can come up with an idea. It's interesting tweed, not really everyday wear so might enter this! Depends on what I can come up with.
Looking forward to seeing what everyone makes!
If I had more cash I'd be making another hooded winter cloak, but an exciting one rather than the black wool I made a few years ago!
-
Well. that's the V8933 pattern out the window - it's far too "straight-up-and-down", no way that's going round my hips without completely changing the shape of the coat, and I can't be bothered! I have now dragged all my coat patterns out (most, if not all, of them untested!) and will peruse them for a while.
-
I hear you. I have hips as wide as all outdoors and a butt that sticks out nearly as much. 0_0
-
Pattern choice made, Vogue 1494 ( https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1494 (https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v1494) ), with blue lining. All cut out now, and I decided to do some pieces on the bias - just the top back yoke section and the undersleeves, not too much. I also decided to do away with some of the seams to ease the pattern matching, so the upper front pieces and the back pieces have become one - the seam had so little shaping I don't think (or hope!) it will matter. I've also done away with the lower centre back seam.
-
I'm getting better at side seams...
-
Isn't anyone else going to do this? I'm feeling awfully lonely over here, I'm going to need this coat to keep me warm in this cold corner of TSP.
-
Should make the judging easy. 0_0
-
I'm thinking of a sort of technicolour dreamcoat from lots of pieces of brightly coloured silk pieces acquired at Adamley silk sales. It would be a bit of a bonkers garment but as I don't do p&q it would be a way of using it up.
-
Sounds interesting - do it! :D
-
Well here's my pattern, Butterick 6138 and here are all the fabulous pieces of silk. There are some large pattern pieces in this pattern so I may have to piece some together. And I'm frantically unpinning the pattern from a version I have already cut out but not made up yet (UFOs are circling overhead). What have I let myself in for? :o
-
I think I may not be eligible as my Belle frocks were cut out before the official start time.... :(
Pity really, because these frocks will actually be finished. ;)
Jessie
-
Ooooh, Tamnymore, that is going to be fabulous :) That reminds me, I must sew the buttons on my version of that pattern - it is nice, thank you for bringing it to my attention.
-
I'm afraid I don't have anything to enter at present! But hey, automatic win ;)

Jessie
Jessie, if the other entrants are happy for your dresses to be included despite being cut out previously, I'm happy to allow it. We normally don't allow it to be fair to other entrants. Tamnymore & Bodgeitandscarper let me know what you think.
-
Yes, let's include Jessie's desses. Apart from anything else we need people to take part!!
-
And it's a yes from me too, definitely include Jessie's dressies :P
-
Today's progress - and the pattern matching has gone quite well, shame that the collar didn't quite work right though - it still needs seam allowances trimming, pressing, some top/edge stitching, buttonholes, and hemming yet. I was having trouble with my machine (the old Elna) in that it kept making a nest of thread under the fabric and then getting stuck. The first time I re-threaded the bobbin, and then the top thread and it was ok. It did it again a bit later, so I took the bobbin out and gave it a bit of a clean, put the bobbin back in, and no better. I then thought to actually look at the upper thread and realised it had come out of the take up lever/arm thingy, so a big sigh of relief that it wasn't going horribly wrong!
-
I love an excuse to sew something glitzy but I've nowhere to wear it to this year :(
I might have a look through my stash and see if I've anything suitable anyway - not that there's much time left!
-
Samantha, I don't have anywhere to wear a glitzy outfit but I'm just going to sit here and wear mine, like Miss Havisham!
Which reminds me, I'd better get on with it! :S
-
It's a design feature isn't it - sewing red buttons on with blue thread :S :P :D
-
Absolutely - it looks right to me. 0_0
-
And the finished pic - or at least I thought it was finished, note the right sleeve lining still hanging down! It's not a very flattering pic, it really does look better in real life!
-
Nicely done.
-
That's fab Bodgey. I haven't even started!! :S
-
Talking of getting on with it. I finally started to pin out the pattern pieces on my pieces of silk. I think the trick is to find large enough pieces for the biggest pattern pieces. The right back is the biggest pattern piece so it is going to be cut from my largest bit of silk - a polka dot burnt orange. I want to use a really jazzy piece on the upper fronts so I'm cheating a bit by not cutting one of the pieces on the straight grain - there I've told you but maybe you wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't said. I'm trying to stick to the orange/yellow/burnt orange fabric to try to give a unifying theme. I fear I may have lost a wee pattern piece - but if it doesn't turn up I can recreate it from the version I made a year or two ago.
-
Looooving the cute jousting fabric ...What on earth is it ???
-
All this silk came from various silk sales at Adamley, the silk printer, just outside Macclesfield. They print for companies like Turnbull and Asser. I think that this piece is likely to be part of a scarf. Other pieces are from kerchief panels and some are twills probably intended for ties. I do have a whole scarf panel in yellow which I possibly won't sacrifice to this project (so it can stay as a scarf panel for a few more years!)
-
I'd like to join in my first sewalong here.
I have a WI Christmas party next Wednesday, and a dinner between Christmas and New Year to dress for.
I bought some silver pleated jersey, and black pleated jersey from Fabric Godmother, and have a long piece of black and silver devore jersey in my stash. The plan is for a top from the silver pleated and a skirt from the black, with a long cardigan from the devore over the top and skirt. I can't stand the cold, and the WI meet in a Village hall!
I cut out the top and skirt yesterday, so will try sewing them up this afternoon. Will try for a photo of the fabric , but light levels are bad this time of year.
-
Yay, another contender!
-
I don't know if this belongs here, or in Face your phobias. I have altered and repaired jersey garments many times, but not sewed anything in it except nightwear before. There is no sparkle. The black, grey and red I fell in love with at Fabworks, but haven't dared use yet. I think the pattern will be good for it. The red is a heavyish cotton jersey, well matured in the stash. Probably it will be a straight skirt and a longline cardigan. No pattern yet, but could copy something I already have. It should be reasonably quick, since it is mostly on the overlocker. Is that too ambitious in the time?
-
A few years' ago, I had a ready to wear top in a lovely 'dark' yellow very like that pattern. Look forward to seeing how it turns out.
-
Have cut out my top now. Unifying colours are a deep orange (almost red) and blue. I sacrificed a lovely orange and paisley scarf panel to the project but I have a gazillion scarves and may never have got round to using it. It looks redder than it is in the pic.
-
Today opened the pattern, traced the front and did an FBA. Next up is cutting out, probably not the best fabric to start on.
-
And - pieces cut out - and rest. The tension in the room was palpable, I might as well have been defusing a bomb. I tried with my rotary cutter and mat. The jersey was well behaved and sat nicely under the tins of tuna. I succeeded in making a dotted, dashed line suitable for following with scissors, which worked well. Getting the feel of the pressure needed now but for the sleeves I settled for taut cutting (like taut sewing but working the opposite way, holding the fabric down tightly and cutting carefully an inch at a time with my serrated scissors). Tomorrow is testing the stitching on the scraps.
-
I finished the top and skirt this afternoon!
The top is Style Arc Maxine which is designed for ready pleated jersey. It is a maxi dress so I cut the pattern at the hip. All you have to do is sew the shoulders and side seams. The neck , armholes and hemline are unfinished. The shoulder seams gave me trouble, and I ended up sewing them by hand as my machine wouldn't cope with the pleats.
The skirt is just two straight lengths of fabric; I sewed up the side seams and added a 1 inch wide elastic strip to the top. The hem is unfinished.
I'll wait until I have made up the cardigan before deciding on the final length of the skirt and top.
-
"I sacrificed a lovely orange and paisley scarf panel to the project "
Tamnymore, this sounds lovely, I would never be bold enough to do that.
Lost Sunday to unexpected visitors, but just about finished the top. It's come out quite long and I think I could have made the back a size smaller but, hey, better than the High Street (for me anyway) Got to get the camera out next and then make a start on the cardigan.
-
Given that I have so many scarves I'll probably get more wear out of a top. I've washed most of the silk pieces (although not that special panel :S ) and they do wash well so that's always useful. I've acquired some amazing pieces of silk from the Adamley silk sales over the years so even if I never see the same panel again something else will turn up.
I must get a bend on. There are only a few days left! :'(
-
I have to speed up too. The top is done, need a picture - and a photographer, not necessarily in that order. The cardigan/jacket is cut out, but have not decided if it should be cut down to a V neck. Probably should be, to echo the top. It may not be bright and sparkly but I need this outfit. The family are taking us to the wilds of Scotland and I have instructions to take one thing 'smart' to eat out in. Since it is Scotland in the winter, and the rest of the time is boots and trousers, I'm hoping this will be smart enough. Also, if I get lost in the snow, the red should show up for the helicopters, right?
-
I have the front and back put together now and here are closeups of the main fabrics. Still got collar, sleeves and facings to do, not forgetting buttons and buttonholes. :S
-
That looks brilliant, Tamnymore :)
-
Thank you kindly, Bodgey. Still lots to do!
-
That is going to be glam!
-
Top wearable, but will take it in more after we come back. Overall, I like it, will be good for jeans too. I didn't put buttons on the neck because they'd only get lost in the pattern.
Started on the jacket, it has to be the vee neck so cut it back. It sticks on the jersey,so will have to have a lining. Maybe tomorrow, if nothing else happens. Also, the skirt
Thanks for giving me the nudge to get it started. I faced down my phobia of jersey. I just wish I had time to do something for the glitz competition. Last year I made a lovely dress for a family party. A copper dupion and purple lace, which is much nicer than it sounds. Needless to say, I didn't get that done in time either. If only the Sewalong had been running then!
-
Oh bother, I've just realised I haven't emailed anything for this sewalong - has anyone else sent theirs? Is it too late??
-
Yes I sent mine on the 10th which I believe was the official closing date.
-
I had to give up sewing when we had a second lot of unexpected visitors. I have though, cut out linings and facings and have a cunning plan....
-
Yes I sent mine on the 10th which I believe was the official closing date.
I guess if you're the only one who's emailed your pics, you could be the winner. 0_0
I also guess it's too late for me to send mine... :( :(
Is it Fran overseeing this one??
-
Oh dear I hope I wasn't the only one as it wouldn't be a competition then! I've finished my buttonholes since the pics. I'm just glad I had the opportunity to make my top as I probably wouldn't have got it done otherwise. So my 'prize' was definitely to get it finished. Yes Fran was looking after this one but I haven't seen here on TSP for a few days. She was really busy with helping her grandparents move so maybe that's why she hasn't been about.
-
I've just emailed mine - although I presume it won't be accepted now.
-
I think as Fran has been
partying snoozing .....
then its all entries dropped in the email box before she realizes the competition has finished!!!!!
Thats my stance on it anyway!!!!!
-
Soooo... any voting for this?? Fran??
-
As we know Christmas can be a manic time for those with friends, families and parties to attend.
I have been assured that Fran will be back at her desk on the 2nd and we will get the WinterGlitzalongathon voting started then....
Many apologies for those who endured the radio silence on this ......
-
Thanks Iminei :)
-
It's up! Apologies for the huge delay everyone. We are putting some things into place for the coming months which should make sewalongs much quicker.
-
Looking over at the votes, it looks like Tamnymore has won - I do love that top, Tamny, well done 0_0
-
:toast: well done, Tamnymore. :flower:
-
Thank you Bodgey and Fajita. I hadn't realised that it was only two of us who entered this. I really like your coat, Bodgey. We've both got wearable outfits out of it. :D Perhaps a sewalong not so close to the festive season will get more entries. Here's to the next one! :toast:
-
I really struggled with this .. voting when there's only 2 entrants felt rubbish .. both outfits were fabulous and I would happily wear both.. perhaps the lack of entrants was because its such a busy time of year... Congratulations to both of you for your entries
-
I have some red tartan flannel PJs with glittery threads in them ...Love 'em!!
I bet they look cute! I've been trying to find some flannel to use for PJs but can't find anything that's not for kids. Still looking, though.
-
Congratulations Tamneymore ...
An Exclusive TSP Prize Winners badge will be on its way to you just as soon as you pm your address!!!!
-
@Tamnymore .... did you get your prize winners badge hon ??
-
@Iminei so sorry I should have said. Thank you kindly. Yes I received it all nicely packaged and with a little 'certificate'. I shall treasure it! :D
