Title: Singer Coverstitch 14t970c or Janome Coverpro 1000cp
Post by: sewmuchmore on November 30, 2017, 17:56:24 PM
Does anyone own either of these machines? I am watching some on Ebay and wondered if i should bid. I really don't wont to pay a lot for a coverstitch as it would only get occasional use so looking for a second hand one.

I have the Janome, it's been a bit of a learning curve but now I wouldn't be without it.

Mine is a Janome too and I like it.  I don't know if Singers are what they used to be.  I've never come across a Singer coverstitch before.

I had the Janome, and it was mostly ok, but often skipped stitches, especially when you go over a seam.  This meant the stitches don't lock together and could then come undone.  Using certain needles helped, but I sew a lot of jersey so decided to invest in a Babylock BLCS2 which sews perfectly.  I think the Singer doesn't get very good reviews, but I could have remembered wrong!

I've got the Janome too, my advice is to play play play and make notes of the settings of the results that you like. I struggled to begin with and must admit that I don't use the machine much at the moment but wouldn't be without it.

I too have the Janome. It’s the first coverstitch I’ve had so have nothing to compare it to.

By and large it does a job. It does skip stitches from time to time on jersey and I’ve found it’s better when sewing at a faster speed. Having said that I think I need to practise more, rather than as I do mostly, which is sew a sample piece and then sew the real thing. I find it better to stabilise the hems and sew over the stabilised part. Also I find the free arm a little too large for hems on sleeves.

If it’s a good price I would go for it in preference to the Singer, but that’s only on the basis that I don’t feel modern Singers are a patch on the vintage ones.

The Janome can be a little temperamental but it does the job and you can often get round the problems it has like going over bulky seams.
I don't like Singer anything and wouldn't even consider a coverstitch of theirs as I've yet to try an overlocker that worked well.

I have an Elna 444 which is identical to the CP1000 except for the badge.  It's the only coverstitcher I've used so can't compare.  Just go slowly, especially over seams, and use the correct needles.

If you are on Facebook there's a useful group; janome/elna coverstitch users group.  Lots of people report problems with skipped stitches and the advice is nearly always to check the needles and tension settings and once they are right the machines do what is expected of them.

I've just treated myself to the Janome 2000 coverstitcher. Like the OP I'd been looking for a second hand one but the ones I liked were going for almost £300. I bought a new one from SMD for £330. It has a2 yr warranty so I'm happy that any problems would be sorted out. I haven't had a chance to use it in anger yet but it stitched fine when I tried it on an old t shirt. It gets good reviews and I'm aware that if it starts skipping stitches I'll need to change the needles.

The Janome coverpro 1000cp on ebay at the minute is up to £201 with an hour to go...
Edit to add - that was the price it was sold for.
