Vintage Machines / Re: The filthy 201

I might be overdoing it, but I rarely plug a vintage machine in unless it's running through a residual current detector.  I especially make sure of this when I'm out of the house in a hall or somewhere similar.

An electrician told me even after full rewiring, VSMs would never get electrical approval these days like modern machines have to.

This is my 1915 Singer 15 (Sally Sphinx).  This week I managed to get hold of a vintage hand crank with decals matching Sally's. So lucky on that find.

Beautiful machine, there are a joy to sew on. I just got and LED bulb and a buttonholer for mine.

VSMs are totally different beasties once you replace the globe with LED ones, aren't they?

....  I don't have much call for shortening jeans, but may treat myself to a humpjumper or some such eventually.  ...

I use mine for top stitching shirt collars.  Without it my Janome 8900QCP SP and Juki F600 just can't do it without losts of fiddling and coaxing (one stitch at time by the handwheel).

This is right up there with my top favourite gadgets in the sewing room.  Check out the YouTubevideo from the 8.25 mark (or from the beginning, of course  :D ).  This, or something similar, does come with some machines.  The little hole you see in it is used to easily insert a new needle into your machine.

.....  The time she started running on her own I was in the middle of a sewing session, nipped across the landing into the bathroom for a quick wee, heard the whirring, and she was running at full speed.  :o

Wow    ... perhaps my 'ultra-cautious' comment needs a rethink!   -<

.... Don't know what that equates to in British £s, but it sounds incredibly cheap!

Suzie  :vintage:

8.72 British Pounds

Couldn't wait to get out of the shop in case they changed their mind about the price!    :D

This topic brings up an important point about VSMs: you should always disconnect them from the power source when you're not using them.  Some sites recommend doing that even if you're just leaving the room for a few minutes (personally I think that's ultra-cautious).

My Bernina 831 which I found in an op shop.  Had the manual, feet etc for the grand price of $15.

To protect the paint and decals nothing works better than good old Singer sewing machine oil.  Switching between a handcrank and a motor is job that takes only a matter of minutes and a screwdriver.  I regularly switch those two items around between my machines.
