The Show Must Go On / Re: No good just sitting here doing nothing

Oh man, been there, done that!!!  really don't envy your predicament.   I hope it didn't cause you too much stress?  The stupid thing is ... no-one else ever seems too notice all the hard work it took to create the costume, especially if it comes to paying extra for the time it took!!!  I hope it wasn't too horrible for you, and well done for persevering.

Datcat, what a wonderful idea for a wedding!!  I love it, and who cares if it is or is not historically accurate!  I would imagine that the style of dress didn't change that much anyway.  I hope you find what you are looking for, some of the re-inactment sites have basic patterns and ideas for styles of dress.  I hope you enjoy making the costumes and have a really great time at the wedding.

They can take anything from  2-3 hours to 2-3 days.  I charge the customer for the hours spent and the fabric used, so it varies widely depending on difficulty and fabric choices.  The leotards are a set price, as they are squad leotards for a local gym club, and they will keep the design for at least 2 years.

Thought I would post some recent costume photos.  I have had a mad couple of months to get them ready for the festival this half term, but finally got there!

I use these;   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jacquard-Products-Dye-Na-Flow-Exciter-Pack/dp/B0006IKE70/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549345054&sr=8-1&keywords=dynaflow

So far I have not had any issues, but I use an airbrush, not a paintbrush.  Cant see that would make any difference though.  I like the idea of making it removable, then you could wash it separately if necessary.

Oh Lollipop, that is so funny!!! :D  How many times have people been caught out by either not reading the description, or there not being a size guide! (Obviously, never happened to me in any way! :D :D).

If I have non-stretch trim on Lycra, I measure out the hip measurement plus an inch or two on the trim, mark the centre and sides and the two ends at the back (quartered circle), then pin to the leotard/costume and machine the tape, stretching the lycra to fit the trim as you go.  If that doesn't work for you, cut the feathers apart, and just hand sew on individually.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Twisty headband pattern for woven and knit?
« on: January 09, 2019, 13:52:53 PM »
Fran, I think they are made by just making two loops of fabric one wrapped over/under the other, then joined at the raw edges to make a circle.

Hi Al, I am sure what you are suggesting sounds fine.  It is what i have done in the past, only without the powermesh.  I assume the powermesh is for the appliques to attach too??  You will need the negative ease as otherwise it will stretch out when you sew it, as I am sure you are already aware, and the top stitching will help it stay in the right direction! :D

Dolls and Toys / Re: First attempt!
« on: January 07, 2019, 09:59:45 AM »
Thank you for your kind comments!  I don't make stuffed toys, and was really dubious that I could do this one (nothing quite like throwing yourself in at the deep end. is there!).  Anyway, I am fairly pleased with it, but if I ever make another I would tweak it a little.

Presumably you did that without a pattern.  I'm seriously impressed and I'm sure she will love it.
No pattern, unfortunately!  That would have made my life a whole lot easier if I had found one.  I spend ages looking at the pictures of the character, and trying to decide how to get the head shape right.  There were a few tries that ended up in the bin.

That's very impressive. He owes you one!

He most certainly does!!!   :D :D

Dolls and Toys / First attempt!

My son came home from uni just before Christmas, and asked me if I would make him something to give to his girlfriend for a present.  How hard can that be???  "What would she like?" I stupidly asked.  "Well she asked for a stuffed toy version of a character in one of the computer games she plays" he says.  Well, never having heard of said computer game, let alone the character in question, I had to rely on Google images, which helped a bit.  Anyway, there was no way I could do it before Christmas day, but had a go in the days after, and sent a photo of it to my son, (who has very helpfully gone back to uni!).  He is pleased with it, so just waiting to see what the girlfriend thinks! (lots of nail biting). :S
