The Show Must Go On / help with crop top underbust bands
« on: January 05, 2018, 02:56:28 AM »
I am working on two types of crop tops and need some general thoughts on both.. One type is just a crop top and has an elastic band 1" underneath the crop top to help keep it snug... Question is how to apply the elastic... leaving one end of the band/crop top side seam open so the elastic slides in the casing and floats, serging the side seam, casing and elastic... or overlap the elastic ends and fold lycra strip over elastic to create a full circle to attach to crop top...

On the second type of crop top, this one has mesh below the crop top, extending to the shorts, so the belly is not fully exposed.. The AD likes the look of the band under the crop top, but should there be elastic in the front and back of the band if there is mesh below it? and how do you (if you have done this) secure the band so it stays down... do you stitch it to the mesh (zig zag)  or just tack it at the side seams?

This might be confusing in reading, I hope not though! I am working my way through but frustrated at not know the best way to to these! Thanks!

A bit of a 'do' / Beaded lace appliques on tulle
« on: August 27, 2017, 19:35:11 PM »
I am working on a dress that has three layers of tulle above a satin skirt and the top layer of tulle has beaded lace appliques in a triangular shape at the hemline to a good 20" up the front and the entire train in the back. It is rather heavy and I am worried the dingle layer of tulle might tear with it, should I stitxh the three layers together around the lace border or sew the whole thing to the satin? Or should the one layer be strong enough to hold the lace? The lace is almost solid across the sections and beaded. Thanks!

Is there or will there be by any chance a photo gallery? I have not found one yet and would love to have one!

A bit of a 'do' / rhinetones on tulle
« on: August 08, 2017, 16:32:51 PM »
Working on same dress as previous post, but bodice is finished pleat/tuck wise (I am not sure if the bodice is pleated or tucked.. as tucks are stitched at both ends, and pleats are open ended, but I have also seen lots of references to this style of sewn on pleats as pleats1)... I diverge.. The skirt is one large fluff, she wanted bustled sections of tulle all over the skirt, so it has a very fluffy look. At each of the tack points the top tulle will be stitched in place (I figured an X securely knotted off) and a rhinestone on top to cover the stitched and add the sparkle she wants. My question is hotfix or sew on (the metal catch holder at the back of the stone)I might revert to E6000, but I want to avoid the strings and thought hotfix might be better and faster. The tulle top layer is being tacked to the three under layers of tulle, but not to the satin skirt... The tulle skirts are floating free... advice on which is better to use on wedding dresses stone application wise?

A bit of a 'do' / Draped tucks on a bodice
« on: July 29, 2017, 09:53:00 AM »
I am working on a wedding dress that has draped tucks covering the bodice and was curious... mine are folded down vs upwards, but all I have seen are upwards facing tucks, does it matter? Also, in stitching them down, is it better to sew the entire length or tacks in strategic places? I have previously sewn along the length on chiffon tucks but they puckered and I want these to lie smoothly against the bodice.

The Show Must Go On / Appliques... to machine or hand stitch on
« on: July 06, 2017, 17:38:11 PM »
The phrase "it all depends" may be the answer here,  but I am in constant debate with myself to machine stitch or hand stitch appliques on to stretch bodices. I am curious what the general feel is of others towards the benefits of each style.. why hand stitch if machine stitching is faster and retains a stretch?

Thanks!
