Patterns Discussion / True Bias Hudson joggers
« on: April 14, 2023, 18:24:56 PM »
Has anyone made the True Bias men's Hudson joggers? As discussed on my Members Diary page, the sweatshirting fabric received from Minerva Fabrics was not at all as advertised :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed: on their   website, which had stated it had 30% horizontal stretch and 35% vertical stretch. I'd decided that this was near enough to the minimum 40% called for in the pattern. On delivery I prewashed the fabric and cut it out, (not clever!) - too keen to get started I guess! It was then that I realised that there was zero stretch horizontally and not much vertically.

So my concern is now that these are going to be too small, but I wondered if anyone had had experience of making them in a non stretch sweatshirting?

In the wardrobe / Moto style jacket in cream wool mix
« on: February 17, 2023, 21:59:59 PM »
Finally finished this jacket, what a relief. The fabric is a cream wool mix (I think- it was in the bins at Abakhan 2 years ago, no label).  Although it frays like the devil, is that an indication of more manmade than wool?

It's a very loose weave so I put fusible interfacing on all pieces. I tried to match the pattern but have managed it everywhere.

Technical Help / Under collar of a jacket
« on: February 02, 2023, 15:25:16 PM »
I'm making a moto style jacket using McCalls 7694 https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/87927
The surprising thing is that the under collate isn't cut on the fold but is cut in two on the bias. Does anyone know what might be the reason for this? I've cut the rest of the jacket out and am finally making some progress with it but haven't cut the last piece out yet since I've been wondering about this. The fabric is a cream check bouclé.

In the wardrobe / Stretch jersey sparkle dress
« on: January 23, 2023, 16:44:32 PM »
This is Vogue 8685 https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/42479 that I made earlier this month. You can't really see the fabric so well in this photo but it's teal with a lovely sparkle from Abakhan. Just agonising over what shoes I can wear with them to go out in tonight as my toes are still recovering from an operation in December. The sensible thing would be to wear some trousers and heavy boots but I'm really want to wear the dress!  :boohoo:

In the wardrobe / Sweatshirt dress
« on: January 22, 2023, 23:34:16 PM »
This is the second dress I've finished this year so my pledge to abstain from fabric buying until I've cleared out 20 metres from my stash must be motivating me!

I used Butterick 6388 https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/81224
and while it is thicker than the pattern photo seems to be, it has turned out reasonably well.

I wanted it a bit longer than it was drafted but could only add a slight extension which meant I had to put a false hem on it. I'd also tried, unsuccessfully, to match the pattern on the   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  front seams so was struggling to fit it in. Also had to piece together the semicircular yoke which should have been cut on the fold.

It's cosy though been useful today with our cold weather in the North!

In the wardrobe / Sequinned pants!
« on: January 04, 2023, 13:59:07 PM »
I made these sequinned trousers in dark green for New Year's Eve at my sister's, quite pleased with them. I used an out of print pattern but hacked it to put elastic in the back rather than the back zip that was in the pattern. They're a little loose on the waist though, wondering whether to put the zip back in. Or shall I just reduce the elastic width, since putting a zip in will not be easy which is why I hacked the pattern in the first place?

In the wardrobe / Has anyone made Vogue 8825?
« on: December 15, 2022, 22:33:44 PM »
I'm looking for advice on making this pattern https://somethingdelightful.com/vogue-patterns/v8825#&gid=1&pid=1
and hoping that someone has made this already.

In the past when making stretch knit tops or dresses the instructions tell you to stitch tape into the shoulder seam to prevent it from stretching and starting to sag. But in this pattern the shoulder seams continue to the top of the sleeve as the sleeves are in two pieces with the back of the sleeves continuing from the back bodice. (I hope that makes sense!)

There's no mention of adding anything to the sleeve seam in this pattern which is confusing me. Any thoughts?

In the wardrobe / 2 wrap dresses from Vogue 8379
« on: November 23, 2022, 19:57:38 PM »
Earlier this year I made a wrap dress from https://www.sewdirect.com/product/vogue-patterns-v8379/
I used a patterned jersey from Lamazi Fabrics and combined this with a plain jersey for the tie belt, as I felt a little overpowered by the very busy pattern.

It fit me ok without too much adjustment although I'd cut size 12 at the shoulders and size 14 for the side seams and the sleeves. One irritating aspect is that the facing shows slightly at the v-neck, even though I understitched it. Difficult to see this though with the busyness of the fabric.
Then when my darling 93 year-old mum passed away after a short illness late last month, I needed to make a black dress pretty quickly for the funeral. As time was really short due to all the other stuff going on, the easiest thing seemed to be to use the same pattern. Long sleeves were my preference this time, but I didn't want the three-quarter length sleeves with the little cuffs as I find they ride up when putting a jacket or coat on. Also didn't want the collar. Annoyingly the facings fold out again slightly! Reviewers on Pattern Review have made the same observation, not all of them though. I will have to try something different next time I make it.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

In the wardrobe / Kielo wrap dress
« on: September 03, 2022, 18:39:41 PM »
I have been reluctant to try too many Indy patterns thinking why would you pay so much more for them than the commercial patterns? And given my aversion to printing off and sticking together pieces of paper ( expressed in a different thread!) I have to either pay for them to be printed or pay the much higher price for the tissue paper patterns. That said I have done this with some Closet Core patterns and also the True Bias Hudson's. But the Keilo wrap dress pattern was one which I just wasn't sure about, partly because I am nervous about making sleeveless dresses and then never wearing them but also because I thought it would make me look big in the hips. But having seen so many great versions on Instagram, I eventually succumbed and this is the result.

And I think I'm happy that I did. It feels very comfortable on and went together very easily. What do you think?   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Hi, does anyone have any recommendations for sewing machine service and repairs in the Crewe/Stafford/Shrewsbury area?  Your advice would be much appreciated since I’m having difficulty finding one having recently moved here.  :boohoo: :boohoo:

In the wardrobe / 2 striped knit tops
« on: May 18, 2020, 19:27:19 PM »
Comfortable knit tops has been in need lately, and these two fit the bill. First is Butterick 6058, here
This fabric is lovely with a slight gold glittery stripe in it, from Stitchy Bee.
The second is a cut down version of McCall’s 6886

This photo had to be retaken as initially it showed a spare tyre around my middle that I’ve developed since lockdown!

In the wardrobe / Corduroy button-through skirt
« on: March 26, 2020, 19:35:05 PM »
This was based on a skirt I drafted a couple of years ago. A-line and button-through, I used it for an embroidered chambray. But when I saw this corduroy online, I immediately thought of that pattern but wanted it longer and straight.

In the wardrobe / Butterick 6378 blouse

I’m making this top in View B:  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I’m unsure about keeping the sleeves as it’s a very large print and it might overwhelm me. Leaving the sleeves off might tone it down a little. What do you think?  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Patterns Discussion / Teaching a non-sewer to sew
« on: March 07, 2020, 19:47:45 PM »
I was asked by a friend last night if I could teach her to sew. She likes the idea of starting with a simple top. She’s very different from me though in size, being much more well-endowed though which is what is making me a tad nervous, since I’ve never really sewn for other people other than a skirt for my sister. I think an FBA might be necessary.

I feel that a lightweight cotton might be the best fabric to start with. But I really need a pattern for which an FBA is very easy.   Pattern ideas are Butterick 6687 or Simplicity 8883
The latter has the advantage of different size cups, but I’m not sure that will be enough.

Any thoughts?
