Fun with Fabric / Lost mojo
« on: October 09, 2021, 16:01:06 PM »
I got an email saying I have a fabric delivery in my mailbox. How bad is my lost me make mojo that I haven't yet been to the box to get it? In my defence I did say I wasn't going out at all today and our mailbox is  about 300metres away down the mountain ( and of course, then I have to climb back up)

As I said before, I'm not a block maker usually - my quilts are organic - so the block restrictions are new to me. How do you resize one if you find a pleasing patterns ? Do you just have to do the maths?

A Good Yarn / Inspired to knit again
« on: May 01, 2021, 10:02:43 AM »
So I downloaded Garnstudio's Santorini sweater, ordered the yarn and  a new number 5 round needle because for some reason I only had one single needle in the case.  All arrived in a couple of days so I started last night only to find I'd ordered the wrong length circular - it's only 40cms so it's like trying to knit a sock and not easy to cram the back of a sweater on it! Means I'll have to wait until I next go to Perpignan next Wednesday before I can get on with it. Drat and blast.

Would normally be buried under metres and metres of frills but not happening again this year. Instead I've been asked by a dress shop to magic some scarves, infinity and other, some cushion covers , scrunchies and some simple t-shirts - Got free rein. Enjoying muchly!

Fun with Fabric / iTokri
« on: November 24, 2020, 13:22:30 PM »
Got to put a shout out for this Indian company  - thanks to whoever it was on here who first mentioned it- I am in love (my fiancé in the fabric shop in Figueres can beg and plead as much as he wants but my heart now belongs to another!)

www.itokri.com

I ordered 2 x 3mtrs  of handwoven fabric and 1 x 3mtr of a printed fabric together with some handmade soap. They were dispatched on the 21st and arrived her today via DHL.  Beautiful fabric,  very light but not transparent at all. It is a narrowish fabric - about 110cms so that's why I got 3 mtrs for what I have in mind.

I stepped into the rabbit hole on the site menu called "running fabrics" thought they meant stretch stuff for athletic gear but I  it refers to repeatable fabric lines.  I had to do the currency conversion a few times to ensure I wasn't dreaming - the prices are incredible.

Parcel arrived beautifully wrapped and included a hand written note and a little gift of a coaster.  Paid via Paypal. I'm looking lustfully at some beautiful indigo fabrics now.

Not a lot of activity on here at the moment is there? Wonder if we'll ever be making frilly frocks in huge numbers again? -<

Patterns Discussion / V9114
« on: September 25, 2020, 11:26:25 AM »
Next time I even consider buying a pattern please someone stop me - what sort of shape are they making for?   I finally decided to make up the pants from the yucky brown stripe cotton I was given figuring at worst they'd do for gardening ( or a toile)

To start with , measurements: according to the hip I am a Medium, but the waist would be about 10cms too small, however as it's a pull on and has to go over the hips logic says the waist won't be an issue. For a change instead of just going at it I tissue fitted the top bit - it fitted down to be a Small!

I have a flat bum adjustment on most patterns. That bit was fine. but the crotch seam needed 7 cms removed - 7!! that's A LOT. Who the heck is that tall, oh and that was before the waistband went on!  Anyway having got crotch and waist depth sorted off I went. Ah check length before cutting - needed an extra 6cms to reach my ankle bone - I'm not very tall 5'6" in old money.  So I made them up and they look totally totally ludicrous - The leg width down to where the insert bit  joins needs 10 cms removed to have some semblance of shape. There's loose and there's L  O  O  S  E !!

I'm not giving up because I thing that if I can beat it into submission it'll look quite cute despite the grotty colour!

Embroidery and Embellishment / Painting on silk
« on: August 29, 2020, 13:28:56 PM »
Anyone on here keen on this?

I'm asking because I have a big fringed dance shawl made from silk . The body of the shawl is plain and I feel it could do with something, but not embroidery - it already weighs a ton - the fly in the ointment is that it is strong dark red colour so what would work that would show up against this background?

I've done silk painting before many moons ago but always on a white silk ground, never experienced it on a dark background and as the thing cost me several hundred euros I don't want to take a chance and muff it up!

Any inspiration please - would a simple serti outline design work do you think?

In the wardrobe / Pin tucks
« on: August 14, 2020, 14:17:18 PM »
OK so here's another one!  I have a length of white double gauze crinkly ( a bit) cotton. Spurred on by Manuela I have dug out my Bella dress pattern and am thinking the following: No sleeves. Put a centre front seam and  top stitch it and then either side of that add in about 5 pin tucks  - end shape and width to be decided before I cut out the pieces.  Now the quandary - pin tucks and crinkly cotton - bad idea ?  or have you all done it and loved it? I'll do a sample first but I'd like your inputs  before I do.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / How to fix a buggered tension spring
« on: August 10, 2020, 12:59:24 PM »
Is this something I can ( should be able) to do by myself?

Janome My Lock  something or other and it's the spring on the upper looper tension disc that's lost  the will to live.

Fun with Fabric / But it's brown!
« on: July 16, 2020, 13:29:57 PM »
I have been give a 3 metre length of handwoven fabric, made by a friend's mum. Gorgeous quality but it's brown with a stripe. I loathe brown and the stripes  make me look like an extra from Life of Brian if I made a dress and tie it up with a rope belt and sandals!  :o  I don't know what to do for the best. She'll be expecting to see something made from it.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Trauma recovery
« on: June 22, 2020, 11:31:47 AM »
As I will have been severely traumatised by this experience  and have been separated from my machines for 5 months and counting - do I deserve a coverstitch machine to help me recover?

Edited to add: Mr C is buying himself a new laptop tomorrow - not that that should colour any considerations, of course.

Tech Know How / Huh?
« on: May 09, 2020, 10:24:28 AM »
I received a mail saying Manuela had mentioned me in  the friday8th thread. When I clicked on the link I got a page up telling me I did not have access to the page. So I went the long way round and scrolled back down the thread to see what she had said. No trace of another Manuela post on that thread. Any ideas??
