Machine Accessories / Re: Scissors
« on: March 14, 2024, 14:03:51 PM »
My shears are Shozaburo, made and purchased direct from Japan a lifetime ago when I was training as a tailor, they were brilliant but sadly are too heavy for me now. I think Kai took them over, I now have a couple of pairs of Kai lightweight which are brilliant, they cut like razor blades and don't make my hands ache with the weight of them, er that's when I get chance to use them of course.

I'm not a quilter but I do appreciate the work that goes into it and can honestly say I haven't seen one I don't like. I honestly don't understand how or why people can be so disparaging, take no notice of the morons.

Great dress, fits you well and the style suits you. It takes me back a long long way  :o, strange how things drift in and out of fashion isn't it.

Sewing Machines / Re: Help please for this singer!
« on: March 06, 2024, 21:52:35 PM »
@William, I personally wouldn't have a new Singer if I was given it and paid to use it. However a vintage one would be a very different story, the new ones are not good at all.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: New overlocker tips

Get what you feel most comfortable using.
I've got 2 Janomes (can't remember the model numbers  :embarrassed:) the older one I really like, the newer one not so much as it seems a bit noisy compared to the other but it sews well. Both are easy to thread from scratch but if I forget what goes where it's colour coded anyway.
It's rare I thread up either of them from scratch I just tie the threads together and run it until the new colour works it's way through. Now and then I have to thread the needles depending on what size needle I'm using or if I haven't tightened the knots up so it's small enough to go through the eye.

Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hi, I’ve just joined the forum.

Welcome @Clduk, welcome from me too. I've been sewing too since I was very young and made a career out of it. Now in theory I'm supposed to be retired and should be able to sew when I feel like it unfortunately it's not worked out that way due to unexpected family commitments.

Hmmmm, there are 1 or 2 I like but won't be buying any of them, not that I'd have time to sew any of them if I did.
Wow, when did they start costing so much  ::thinks::

Sewing Machines / Re: Machine for my Mum
« on: January 22, 2024, 19:28:59 PM »
@AnthonyExmouth, if your mum liked your aunts machine had you thought about trying to get hold of one of those for her? OK I know it'll be used if you can find one but if you take someone who knows about machines with you and get serviced I reckon your mum would be delighted. The vintage machines were made in a far superior way to the modern ones and will outlast the newer ones, not so many bells and whistles but there's a lot less to go wrong which in my opinion is a big advantage.

Welcome back @garynortheast, that's a wonderful collection of machines you manage to accumulate, how lovely your twins are interested in sewing too.

Hi Tina, welcome from me too. Well done on loosing all that weight, it must have been very hard work 🥇👏. Loads of help here from lovely people with an incredible amount of combined knowledge.

13
There's too much pressure on your machines foot to sew fabric like that, sorry. You'd be far better sewing it by hand with wool if you have any, you'll get a much neater finish and more than likely invisible repair.

Well hello @grndkntrl, have a good look round, we'll soon whet your appetite for asking questions. I'm lanky too especially for a woman (6') and a retired qualified tailor and still find I've forgotten how to do something or even have to ask things I don't think I ever knew.
