Calling batik experts!
« on: May 22, 2020, 16:37:26 PM »
I`m very partial to a bit of batik and am looking for some to make a dress.  Last year I had some really nice (but expensive) from Croft Mill but they have sold out of that quality this year.  I`m now looking at Doughty`s and Empress Mills - obviously they are aiming mainly at patch-workers so I wonder if it would be too stiff to make a dress?

Any thoughts?

I'm currently making a quilt using almost exclusively batiks, and they are certainly no stiffer than normal quilting fabrics.  They were all bought from Doughtys and Hannah's Room, and sold as quilting fabrics.

I made a top in a batik last year and it came out beautifully.  Think slightly crisp cotton, but not stiff - and I don't think there would normally be any difference between batiks sold for quilting and those sold for dressmaking.
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

I was anticipating a discussion about doing batik. I'm hardly an expert but..., well....,anyway....

I'll show myself out.  :ninja:

However, some batik for dressmaking is rayon rather than cotton. And occasionally you find cotton in a lighter weight. Not from a quilt shop. I've used quilt shop batik for garments and if you pair it with the right pattern it's fine. Just like all garment sewing you need compatible fabric and pattern.
Hey Bill! Read the manual!  Hehehe.

I've used Doughty's batiks for dresses and they have been fine.  Best for styles which have a bit of structure.

These two are from Butterick 6018.  The first one now has a matching face mask!  Next time I wear it I'll try to remember to get a photo of the ensemble.

Sorry about the crappy photos; they do look better on!

Thankyou
I've gone for some from Doughty's. Empress Mills had some I liked a lot and it was cheaper but they say they have a 3 week dispatch time currently
