Hi everyone

New here and new to sewing, 43 and would love to get into making vintage clothes from 40s and 50s! No where near that yet but willing and eager to learn!

Hi
I see you're interested in making vintage clothes.  One of the contestants on GBSB is into vintage clothes and I like to see what she's wearing and her hairstyle/look.

Welcome to the forum.

I collect vintage sewing patterns...most of them from the 50's and 60's, with a few from the 40's. I don't make the patterns up.  0_0  I just enjoy looking at the pretty pictures.

Sandra.

Good morning and welcome.

I wish I still had a waist for those 40s/50s dresses!

Hello and welcome @Mrsdawes20.

I love the 50's look, but something of which to be aware is sizing.  The original patterns, especially those from the 50's, were for a time when women wore foundation garments to pull in the waist and lift up the bust.  You will be much better off with reissues and there are plenty of those from the 50's, but fewer from the 40's.

@Sandra
I came across some children's (3 yr old approx) vintage  patterns yesterday when sorting through my pattern stash which I would be happy to give to you if you'd pay the postage. :D

It wasn't just the foundation garments that made them wearable - everyone had been subject to food rationing and there weren't nearly so many overweight people!

Welcome to TSP @Mrsdawes20

I too like the 50's fashions but with a modern twist.  I'm not so keen on those from the 40's but I agree with @UttaRetch about sizing.  Every now and then the big pattern companies completely overhaul their sizes and thus their standard blocks from which they draft their patterns.

I have a wonderful book, picked up for £2 in a second hand bookshop all about pattern sizing, construction and grading publised in 1967 with parts of the text taken from a 1957 HMSO publication about British Standard sizes.  I know it's all out of date now but the book is full of tables and charts showing just how much variation in sizes there is amongst the (then) population.  Also some wonderful photos of measurements being taken - a reminder of how underwear has changed over the years.  Just look how badly fitting some of it is! :o  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Welcome @Mrsdawes20 can't wait to see what you 'knock up'  :)

@BrendaP my first thought on looking at those photo's was, "how unusual for a woman at that time to have those tattoo's"  :facepalm:
Let it sew, let it sew, let it sew
