Fabric for summer trousers

Fabric for summer trousers

My scrub sewing is come to an end soon so planning some shamelessly selfish sewing.

I am in need of some summer weight trousers as I have put on lbs and many pairs from previous years no longer fit. I don't want anything voluminous but would like them to be drapey rather than skin tight clingy. I will most likely use a Style Arc pattern such as https://www.stylearc.com/shop/sewing-patterns/besharl-pant/. I'd love a pair in a woven viscose print but then I would be stuck for tops. I'm also in need of tops as some of mine are a wee bit snug in the bust but that's for another day.

Any thoughts, Lightsiders? Darksiders welcome to chip in too.

@Puzzler I am thinking on the same lines too, I also think my scrub sewing is ending soon. I want to make trousers and tops.  I like that trouser pattern, have you used it before?  My trousers don't always turn out so well.  :vintage:

I bought this one last year:

but haven't had the right fabric for them yet. It struck me as a very civilised sort of waist "band". I like the one you picked too.

I've made and wear lots of viscose trousers in the summer ( like right now), all patterned fabrics and I just wear them with plain coloured tops or t-shirts.

Yes to viscose fabrics, lovely and cool to wear.

I too have gained lbs (and mislaid the bag of summer stuff in the loft, but not sure much would fit anyway)

I am thinking this summer of sewing some long shorts (come just below the knee, as I have an unsightly bulge on the inside of the knee) in something mid weight with stretch (e.g. bengaline) to wear with longer tunic tops.

And then some wider legged viscose culottes more a tea dress length (below mid calf) to wear with more fitted tops as I prefer these to skirts.

I've been pondering patterns too, though it might just be simplest to adapt New Look 6216 with different leg length/width.
I also have Butterick 6947 where I've made the trousers but not the culottes yet.

Currently getting by with some altered ready to wear I bought online as I was a bit desperate!

I haven't made the Besharl trousers yet - need to buy the pdf first! I have made some other Style Arc trousers and know they fit me without much alteration. I have to increase the waistline as I am more square shaped these days. The Margaret ones are the last I made. They require stretch woven and are more snug. Better for cooler weather.

Wearing plain tops with print trousers - I don't have the plain tops. The average T-shirt does not flatter me but I have a load of top patterns. I could think in terms of coordinating outfits rather than a bunch of seperates.

Shorts, only if they are below the knee and even then I am self-conscious of my white legs and very visible veins. Not a pretty sight. DD1 goes dark brown in the sun. She laughs at my white legs and runs for her sunglasses to shield her eyes from the glare she says they produce.

Culottes, I have been meaning to try an Itch to Stitch pattern for them purchased ages ago but hesitant due to the above mentioned.

Will stick with trousers for now. I'm off to investigate the fabric shop link Sewmuchmore has posted.

Thank you, all. :* (socially distanced, of course)

I have just sent off a sample order to myfabrics, you get up to five samples free but pay for postage, if you want more I think it's a £1 per extra sample.

I have 3 pairs of short shorts here but I feel very uncomfortable wearing them, don't like showing my legs. Prefer a loose pair of pants or crops. Going to make some double gauze wide legged pants when I get home.

I like linen when it's hot like it is here at the moment, ok so it creases like hell except for where you want it to but it's lovely and cool.

I have just bought some linen viscose. Linen is my favourite for summer but the viscose will add a bit of drape. As regards patterns I'm probably going to give the Sew house 7 free range slacks a go with some good fabric. just toiled with some hideous sky blue cotton linen mix and it looks ok. Pattern has tapered and wider leg options and comes in standard and curvy fit.

I am pondering four fabrics.

https://www.mysewingbox.co.uk/collections/linen-fabric/products/seaglass-plain-linen-viscose-fabric
https://www.mysewingbox.co.uk/collections/viscose-twill-fabrics-uk/products/viscose-twill-teal-fabric

Above two found after reading Efemera's post entitled Post. Turns out this is a shop I had been meaning to visit because it's near where I worked. Parking was always impossible though.

https://www.backstitch.co.uk/linen-cotton-purple
https://www.backstitch.co.uk/viscose-twill-air-force-blue

I found two pieces in my stash to use for the moment, one a dark blue-purple cotton that isn't too structured and a sand-coloured blend that has drape and added lycra. The latter may be better suited for the Margaret pattern. Bought the Besharl pattern today.

Lovely fabrics - I particularly love the teal twill.  Hmmm.  I really don't need any teal twill.  Who knows when I will though?
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.
