Hiding a PVA stain

Hiding a PVA stain
« on: August 15, 2020, 10:08:59 AM »
Hi all,
My favourite pair of shorts received a child related pva stain.... which frankly looks like my personal hygiene is questionable  :S

I thought about hiding it under a ‘spare button’ or possibly under a square or diamond of satin stitch, possibly with a few runs of different colours.

Any thoughts or advice? Or advice on colours?

Once PVA is dry it's permanent.  Not much you can do about it other than to cover it up.

Its an old glue mark from collecting the kids and their models and I must have missed that there was a drip of PVA and by the time I got home it was well dried in...  I don’t think I’ll be getting it out by washing :(

What about colouring it with a grey Sharpie?

@Roger
If you Google 'PVA glue removal', several ideas come up. Might be worth trying one/some/all ?

I tried a few things a bit of embroidery... one lot of thread was too thin to cover the other too thick for the fabric... I wanted a Norwich block but that didn’t work... so I’ve put in a piece of turquoise satin stitching.... my poor 500 is really playing up at the moment it’s seems unusual... I’ll have to open it and give it a clean and some oil I think.

Got the stitching looking ok.... and had carefully moved the front pocket out of the way...and realised that I caught the back pocket.... so that’s now been cut and satin stitched too....

As a primary school teacher, PVA stains are part of the territory. I know you have fixed it this time but if it happens again there is a way to get it out.

Soak the item in cold water overnight. The water must be cold as heat will set it in further. You can put in a little detergent but I don’t find it needs it at this stage. When you take it out, it will have either gone or be a ‘sludge’ depending on how thick the glue was. If a sludge, scrape off and soak a bit longer.

Wash the item on a cool wash in the washing machine and voila it should be gone!

I’ve only had this method fail once and that was on some suede type fabric so not surprising.

the PVA is an old stain - must be nearly 2 years old... no amount of soaking was going to get it out unfortunately.

But I now now what to do with the next one! Thanks all

@Hummingbird  I didn’t actually read the link but good to know my method is the ‘approved’ one lol.
@Roger  you’re right - nothing is getting out a 2 year old stain lol
