I think it would look good with plain. buttons in the 4 colours ( red, blue, green , yellow). You could do covered buttons.
Black buttons would disappear.
Life's too short for ironing.

Do you want the buttons to be a feature, or just functional?

If a feature I agree with @Ploshkin ;all the same design but in the four main colours, if you want them to merge into the background then go for black.
Brenda.  My machines are: Corona, a 1953 Singer 201K-3, Caroline, a 1940 Singer 201K-3, Thirza, 1949 Singer 221K, Azilia, 1957 Singer 201K-MK2 and Vera, a Husqvarna 350 SewEasy about 20 years old. Also Bernina 1150 overlocker and Elna 444 Coverstitcher.

Second vote for covered buttons - in the challis fabric.  Could be quite elegant.
