Octobers BOM - Layering and Quilting
« on: October 02, 2020, 08:33:18 AM »
Autumn is well and truly here .... and while its wet and windy out there
we can now prepare our wonderful blocks for assembly.

Many of you have been layering and quilting your blocks over the past few months ...
so this will be an easy month for you ..

But you may want to revisit a block that you are not particularly happy with,
or change the colour scheme of another ..
You may even want to make another block or two to bring your total up
or to replace one you just really dont like that much ...

NOW is your time to do that!

Do read right through the OCTOBER's BOM tutorial before you start!!!

So without further ado ...

Here we are at the NINTH month of the 2020 BOM !

OCTOBER's BOM

There are a minimum of Twelve 12" blocks for this years BOM:
Some months there will have been two blocks to make and some only one.

This month I will guide you through layering and quilting your blocks
and in November I will take you through  assembling them, using a QAYG method,
into a fabulous lap or cot sized quilt (or even a series of comfy cushions.)

And everyone who finishes the year with a completed quilt (or full series of cushions)
will receive an exclusive The Sewing Place Prize Winners Badge or Sew on Patch

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]      [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I have chosen a monochrome theme with pops of colour for my quilt,
you may have chosen another colourway/theme ...
Brights, plains, patterns, pastels, neutrals ... the choice has been yours!

As ever when you click on the link, select the first picture,
and click on the i icon to bring up the destructions
on the right side of your screen.

Do read through The Basic Basics Thread before you start.

Please post pics of your blocks each month
and by the end of the year we will have a fantastic album for the archives

I guess I better get on the ball and do the last 3 month's blocks if I'm going to earn that patch! Been a busy summer here.

Picture no 4 - no rubber(eraser) to be found but I did have some rubberised, rough fingered gardening gloves.

Done nearly as good a job

Now to find a sponge!

I have found that a few of mine blocks are not 12.5 ins - whoops - I thought it was only the one

It's kind of cheating, I think  :ninja:

I took an under-sized spare block from June, that I made when I had gone potty and created loads of quarter square triangles, and just made it bigger!

It's actually going to replace the Maple leaf block in the finished quilt which came out too big and can't be trimmed down because it would lose all its carefully crafted points  ;)  It's exactly the right colours so it won't mess up my plan.

All my blocks are now layered, quilted, sashed and joined. I'd like the quilt a little larger so now I'm freestyling on the borders. :) Haven't got much fabric left so I'm having to be a bit creative.

Here's another Bear claw block to replace the one I made in August that, like the Maple leaf, was just too big. I carefully made everything half a smidge smaller and now it's slightly on the small side but that will disappear within the seam allowance. I have also quilted it - most of my blocks are done now but I didn't think I needed to post them all individually as I will wait to post the finished article.

eta The blue dots are supposed to wash off. Eventually.

I've come to a resounding halt. :o I've pieced, layered and quilted my borders and corner blocks, but now I've run out of fabric to attach them to the main quilt. That's what comes of trying to be good and not order too much fabric. I've learned my lesson - I shall always order plenty from now on. :) Just need to wait for my order to arrive, and then I can continue. Might have a look at the lightside while I'm waiting?

I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

@wrenkins - once I'd joined my main blocks together (4 X 3), the quilt looked a little small so I went off piste!  :D Carried on chopping and hacking at my fabric to add 5" borders and a small square in each corner - nothing fancy. There's loads of mistakes but it will keep someone warm. Will probably be sending it to PL if I can ever get out to post it. :)
