Any way to cancel automatic locking stitch?

I spoke to Sam at Janome Customer Service this morning and she advised that there isn't a way to turn off the lock stitch at the beginning of the zig zag stitch    They are set like that, but you do have the option to lock or reverse stitch at the end!

Not the answer we were looking for, but it's an answer 

I think starting the stitch on a scrap piece of fabric suggested earlier in this thread is going to be the best solution for me to avoid this.  Just have to remember before I hit the pedal!
