@Iminei the flying geese method is very good indeed but mine came out quite a bit bigger than they ought to have done

@Lowena @Iminei And just thank your stars I'm not appearing on the broomstick to teach you (both?) how to make them right first time - no trimming required!

(Though actually, I do check the sizes as I go, boring but worth it in the long run... I learnt this the hard way ;))

Got a problem

Block 3-  Take 3 1/2" Red square and frame with a 4 1/2 mid square cut in 4 .

My Red square is 3" finished so thats right  but I cant get 1/4" from all the points for seam allowance to make a 4 1/4" finished SiS !!! Can anyone please  advise as soon as possible, I dont want to waste the entire day.....

Pic 1 shows 3" centre from 3 1/2" cut Pic 2 shows inability to get a 4 1/4" SiS

The triangles for the outer square should be cut from a 3 3/4" square piece rather than a 3 1/2" square piece x

the red was a 3 1/2" sq cut ... the pale grey was a 4 1/2" sq cut across both diagonals

The finished size of the inner sq is now 3" ... as it would be when the cut size was 3 1/2"

I think the pale grey should've been cut from a 4 1/4" sq instead ... (my eyesight .. my bad)  but that doesnt solve the problem as its the inner sqs final measurement that is the vital one I think ???

@iminie  QSTs cut from a 4.25" x 4.25" should fit around a 3" x 3" centre square. BUT that means that the outside edges will all be cut in the bias.  You will probably do much better to cut HSTs from two 3" x 3" squares.

Flying Geese the weird way

Actually I think that is the best way of doing them, the others are wasteful!
If cutting, and sewing, is accurate you shouldn't need to trim to size!

So with the seam allowances still on the block should be 4 3/4"

Why do people make making Flying Geese so complicated? Cut your QSTs, cut your HSTs and sew them together - not that difficult surely.

Similarly, putting triangles round a square - use HSTs and you get nice straight grain edges. If you want to know what size HSTs to cut use Pythagoras - that's why you had to learn it at school.

We still haven't got that finger wagging emoji.... ;)
