I so enjoyed the Laundry Basket Quilt Lockdown Quiltalongathong this March which gave me a structure during those early confusing days and produced this beautiful quilt so quickly ....

Yes it does seem a bit extreme at 7 1/4 yards!!! I dont think thats possible for a 6 x 4 12" block plus a bit of sashing .... @Brendaaaaaaaaa

Is it really background fabric, or does it mean backing fabric?

A big quilt that's say 108" x 108" = 9ft x 9 ft = 3 yards x 3 yards
That would need 2.5 lengths of 42" fabric for the backing
= 2 lengths 3 yards long and one length 1.5 yards long split down the middle and rejoined.
Total 7.5 yards, plus the extra few inches needed for backing so definitley in the region of 7+ metres.

I reckon that if you cut your pieces reasonably small (averaging about 2" x 2") then by the time you have added on the seam allowances and a bit of wastage the total area of fabric is about double the finished area of the quilt - so 7+ metres would be about right for a very big quilt with a design which has roughly half the pieces in "background" fabric and the other half in various colours/patterns.

A King/Queen size quilt doesn't come cheaply!

It's perfectly possible to just be in one Facebook group and ignore all the rest - I  am.
After a while they give up telling you that you are  Billy no mates.   I  have all notifications turned off.

Just had confirmation from Zelda herself that the amount of background fabric is correct at 7 3/4 yards (whatever that is) and that doesnt include the backing fabric.... I dont think I have 7+ metres of any fabric in my stash :(

I think theres going to be a whole lot of negative space in this quilt
