Child sizing help please
« on: December 06, 2020, 11:23:54 AM »
I'm unaccustomed to making children's clothes.
I am making a sweatshirt for the 5 yo girl who is fostered by my neighbours.  I borrowed a t shirt that fits her and the chest measures 22".
I have traced off an age 5 sweatshirt pattern and the finished chest size will be 25".   Is 3" sufficient ease for a child?  The fabric is standard brushed back cotton jersey with a bit of stretch.
Life's too short for ironing.

I knit a 24 inch chest for OH’s granddaughter so it sounds fine to me.

My Love Notions child's t-shirt pattern gives chest size for a 5 year old as 23" and the finished size as 24.5".  I haven't made it yet, but I thought that might help!
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

My skinny 5 year old GS has a 24” chest so I would think you would be fine.

My 2 year old GC has chest 52, the 3 year old 55 and the almost 4 year old 56. 60 cm =24" so I think you'll be ok. I allow 4-6 cm for ease. My GD won't wear anything 'baggy'.

Thanks @Lachica .  I've never seen her wearing anything baggy or oversized so didn't want it to swamp her but didn't want it to be too tight either.

My little boy (aged 3 but quite a chunk) measures between 21 and 22 inches chest and a new sweatshirt (age 3-4 and decent growing room) is 26 inches so that ease sound about right to me. Better too big than too small I reckon.
