For anyone near Pickering, this beauty is in working order and needs some TLC, I have a Singer 348K (now as my main machine) and am more than happy with it.

Just out of curiosity, at one point did Singer  turn into don't buy or treat with caution?

@Gernella, for me they reached that point in the early 70s when they replaced metal parts with nylon and plastic and their quality deteriorated. For others it started in the early 90s when the events described in this 1999 article played out:

The Wrecking of Singer

I love vintage Singers and wouldn’t even entertain the thought of buying a modern one. Then again, that’s just my opinion and I love tinkering with the machines and their accessories.

Wow what a tangled web.  I remember when my sister was 18, I bought her a second hand Singer sewing machine, so that would be 1976.  At the time I remember I was under the impression they were the best, although  it was second hand and I can't remember how much I paid.  I do remember it had snap on bits to create the stitch.  Now she's got a Bernina.

When I went away to college in 1973 my mum bought me my first machine and chose a Singer as she assumed it would be reliable - it was rubbish!
