Hello from Reno, Nevada

Hello from across the pond.
I have recently started collecting vintage and antique sewing machines. I am learning to restore them to stitching again. I am also trying to restore many of the cabinets that house my classic machines.

My wife has a functional sewing room for quilting and embroidery projects. So I get to put my machines to work doing small quilting and sewing "piece work" as we binge watch TV.

I have four 201-2s, four 221s and ten other Singers. I have a Pfaff 332, several White Rotarys, and several singer clones. Most have been functionally restored.

My proudest beauty is a "Golden Gate Exposition - San Francisco 1939" 201-2 in a art deco cabinet. Unfortunately a previous owner damaged the motor windings on this well loved classic.

Most of my machines are motorized but Several are treadle.

I found your link by browsing google hits while researching my latest 1914 Singer.

At 62, I am still working full time servicing Elevators and Escalators. I am married to a full time U.S. Army Officer who is in the Nevada National Guard. We have four adult children(1 girl, 3 boys) , 3 dachshunds, 11 chickens, and no room in my wife's 3-car garage.

We go camping with our fifth-wheel "toy hauler" as often as possible, (pre covid). We like exploring the wide open areas of Nevada with our 4 seat Polaris off highway vehicle. The high desert has four distinct seasons and the mountains are very close. Although camping can be more survival when it is 0°f

I have a Bachelor's Degree in International Studies.

I grew up as an Air Force dependant and retired from the U.S. Army in 2003. I have spent 10 years in Europe during the Cold War. Including several years at San Vito Air Station in southern Italy. I worked with a system very similar to the Large Antenna at Chicksands. As a young child at R.A.F. Larbrook, I remember playing cricket and making noise with my bag pipe.

I look forward to learning more about sewing machines.

I wish every one a safe and happy Holiday season. Apologies in advance for limited editing as the dogs want food and the boss wants me to work.  Grrr.

Welcome to TSP!! I have only one vintage machine, a Singer 221, and love it. I hope you'll share pics of your vintage beauties on the vintage sewing machine thread as well as pics of your three canine babies on the pets thread.

Hi Mark and welcome to TSP!

Have fond memories of Reno from my first trip to the US ('78) and visiting the MGM hotel and the casino on a day trip from SFO area with a US friend.

Greetings from sunny foggy Middle California!

What a collection. My only vintage is a Singer Rocketeer, a 502 I think, that was my grandmother's machine. It is in an exquisite older Necchi cabinet.
Hey Bill! Read the manual!  Hehehe.

Thank you all.
I will be in central Nevada for the next 4 or 5 days with limited cell phone connectivity. (3 hour drive in wet snow.)

So Let me respond quickly to several of your kind comments.
Reno has grown greatly since 78. Thankfully the beautiful mountains that surround Reno are protected from building. Tesla builds there lithium batteries( Panasonic) for there electric cars just east of town as a example. ( one of the largest buildings in North America)

My wife and I mostly listen to the TV. I am in a corner and had to put a small mirror above my sewing station to briefly glace during a pause in my stitching. I have several thousand 2x2 squares for my quilt. ( align, place, stitch, repeat...)

Most of my machines have been rescued from thrift stores. After my first machine discovery, I overheard a nice woman state that she just wanted a  cabinet and would have to dispose of the machine to lighten her new table. My curiosity about old Singers turned into a quest at that moment. I still kick myself for not asking if I could have her discarded machine. I hope that machine survives.

All for now, my adventures at 8000 feet and  0°f nights are beginning soon. It has been a few decades since I was tent camping in the snow.

Welcome @MarkDevine.  You will fit well amongst the vintage machine fanatics appreciation society.  I too 'listen' to the telly since I play the radio through it.

Welcome from me too. I used to enjoy camping in Snowdonia (north Wales). One year it was so cold that when we woke up the sheep from the nearby field had joined us in the tent!
