A quick little bag
« on: January 18, 2021, 06:34:41 AM »
It is a work colleagues birthday today so I quickly  put this together over the weekend. It uses one of my favourite and most versatile wallet patterns by Spencer Ogg. I added a wrist strap so it can be used as a small clutch when we are allowed out to socialise again!

I used Harris Tweed and and PU for the main fabrics and makower for the lining. This pattern is ideal to use up your large scraps as well.

Lucky colleague!  That is really lovely.   :thumbsup:
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

I use a lot of those small bags, and keep intending to have a go.  Yours is so nice, it's made me think about actually sewing one instead of just thinking about it.

Jessie, who is very happy to be here!!  :),  but who has far too many sewing machines to be healthy, and a fabric stash which is becoming embarrassing.

That's lovely @RJR_38 I don't think I could 'knock one up' in a weekend!  :o
Willing but not always able :)

@b15erk  I can’t recommend the Spencer Ogg pattern enough (compact accordion wallet). There are tutorial videos for every step if you get stuck as well - but honestly I never needed them for her patterns.

 @Lilian I’m sure you could. I find making clothing too complicated so if you can make clothes you can definitely do this! As with clothes it is just about making sure you have the right interfacings and cut your pattern pieces accurately

...and no fitting problems with bags :). Your wallet is fab @RJR_38. Love the label, PU strap holder and little studs (what are they?). I wonder did you use Decovil heavy interfacing as per the pattern? I used a Vilene substitute that was stiffer than I'd like. And I prefer the curved flap on yours too. Might have another go now I've seen your beauty.

@Vezelay

Yes, I normally use Decovil heavy. I don't think this one was - it was some 'random interfacing I had back when I bought anything and everything and didn't label it  :facepalm: but definitely a similar weight. Tweed makes it a lot thicker/bulkier as well.

The studs are rivets. I got a rivet press for Christmas - the best £40 solid lump of metal I have been bought. It makes putting them in so much easier rather than using a hand punch and hammer. I can do a rivet in about 45 seconds now. This was a way of me testing it out properly as well.

The curved flap addendum to the pattern is available for free if you are a member of her Facebook group (although to be honest it would be pretty easy to draft yourself)

Rivets - of course! Now I need a rivet press 0_0. Could you post the brand and a photo of yours please? And say which rivets you use? I have a big birthday coming up soon and definitely not planning a cruise  :).

You have a lucky colleague! That is a wonderful gift @RJR_38 .  As for presses, I have a snap/rivet press by Kam Snaps. They have a UK site;

Hello-

Wow - really nice bag! Hope your colleague appreciates it.

Love the use of fabric too!

@Vezelay  This is the one I opted for
http://www.greengrizzly.co.uk/en/hand-preses/1805-universal-hand-press-machine-for-rivets-press-fasteners-and-button-making-atr.html?ps_full_site=1

At the time it came in a starter set with the 9mm dies and some rivets but you can get these separately. I was advised to get the 9mm dies as you can put 7 or 8mm rivets in them but you can't do it the other way round (if that makes sense).

This is a more compact press and some have said you need a little more pressure but I have found it so easy and went through 4 layers of PU in one go no issue at all while sitting down! You can get other green presses that are bigger but I really wanted it compact.

I buy my rivets wherever I get my hardware from- all my usual fb groups etc.

@Sara-S  rivets are different to kam snaps as they permanently join things together - (I do love a kam snap though!). You can use the press to make the holes in the fabrics though which is much easier than a hand held press

@RJR_38 the Kam tabletop  press I use can do both snaps and rivets.
