Bec's entry
What is it and for whom (if applicable)
This is a quilted bomber jacket which I made as a Valentine's day present for my husband.
Pattern used (commercial or self-drafted, anything goes)
It's the
Avelia bomber jacket pattern from Mood Fabrics.
Fabrics used, new techniques learned
I used this
quilted polycotton from Minerva for the main fabric, and some chocolate brown silk shantung which I bought for about 70p a metre from PoundFabrics a while ago (intending to use it for a Beetlejuice costume which is yet to be made) for the lining, and some ribbing fabric from eBay.
This was a very challenging project for me because I have never lined anything, or made any kind of pocket, or added a zip to something before.
A short description on how you made it, any problems overcome etc.
Challenges:
- The lining fabric is so slippy it never stayed put to sew it together, even when pinned
- The zip the pattern recommends is too long and I don't have any tools so the new end is ..uh.. non-traditionally constructed
- The ribbing fabric is so crumbly whenever it's cut, my whole house is covered in fluff. Not sure if my ribbing fabric is especially stretchy or the pattern pieces are wrong but I had to re-cut the bottom and the collar as they were too long.
- The less said about the attachment of the collar, the better.
- Mr Bec has tweaked his back so hasn't been able to stand up for me to check the fit. I checked the lining wasn't too small on him once and then just did the rest blind. It's a more or less coincidence that it fits him quite well.
I'm very pleased with how it's come out.
