You can always cut 2 1/2 inch strips and make a race quilt...

Possiblt if I had the skill - then there's working out the yardage - just a novice about such things.
Still looking

@Iminei   How did you magic link to me using a different name?   :o

@Bjay   Possibly if I had the skill - then there's working out the yardage - just a novice about such things.

I never work out yardage!  I just keep cutting pieces from as many fabrics as I can find which suite the chosen colour scheme until I have enough.  A rough rule of thumb is that cutting up all the pieces and joining them back together takes about double the area of fabric as you finish up with (assuming the pieces are mostly about 2"-3").  if you cut huge patches the seam allowances won't take up quite as much and if everything is really teeny the seam allowances will use more fabric than what is actually seen on the surface of the quilt!

To make a quilt bigger you either scale the blocks up or you make more of them.  You can also add several borders to make a quilt bigger - up to about 12"-15" on each side looks OK.

A wow factor is what I'm after

A lot of that is down to getting the colours right, but you also need a good mix of lights and darks so that the pattern shows.
