Dip dyed fabric?
« on: April 22, 2021, 21:16:12 PM »
On Sewing Bee Raph made a dress which was apparently sewn from dip dyed fabric - the end result was very like a border print on the skirt.
I really liked this and would like to have a go. Any ideas how to do it? It looked almost as if the finished skirt had been dipped but each section must have been done separately - or some fabric dipped before cutting?

Raphael dyed his broderie anglaise fabric last week too.

He certainly didn't have time to dye it during the making of the TV programme, so I'll guess that he dip-dyed the fabric before - and then just 'pattern matched' when he cut it out.

I dip dyed  but made the dress first. I made up a dye solution at 25%, dipped my fabric for the appropriate time then added enough dye to make the solution 50%, dipped the next section, repeat until the bottom section was in 100% dye solution. I used Procion dye. It's in my diary on here.

Well I finally dyed today. Set up under garden umbrella to avoid rain diluting the dye. This was Procion Raspberry. Had to guesstimate quantities as my kitchen scales don't weigh accurately under about 10g. Instructions said 3-5g of dye powder per 100g dry fabric. I had 134g of dress so used about 1/3 of the 25g pack. Divided this  into 4 portions. Dip-dye has worked but the colour is a bit more vibrant than I'd planned, though some will no doubt wash out after the printing stage. I don't have any potatoes big enough to make my stamps (not using my tasty garden spuds for this) so shopping tomorrow.
