The skills are very transferable.  I've only made quilts for about 3 years but as a lifelong garment maker I use many tips and tricks I have learnt over the years.  I also now use newly acquired quilting tricks for garment making.
If you can do one you can do the other.
Life's too short for ironing.

Same here @Lowena , they are very well made @Iminei  but I am absolutely no good at doing something I don't want to do, my heart is not really in it so I fail.  If it's wrong in dress making, I take it out and do it again.  I've not forgotten the little adventure into doing a quilted  pad for my lap, some ends do not match where two sides join.  I set off with a fancy stitch which seemed a bit strained and off, half way down I realised the foot wasn't an IDT foot.  I finished it off quickly because the fancy stitches were taking too long to create and did just big wavy lines across the corners and middle.
