Aunty J's Lap Quilt
« on: June 07, 2021, 16:29:18 PM »
A.J is having major surgery so I am making her  quilt that will fit on her reclining chair.

I have bought the fabric but now am wondering whether I should wash it first. Usually I don't unless it is for a baby

This is going to be in a Disappearing 9 patch pattern

Such pretty colours....I never wash beforehand, but that is because I am a lazy cow
If you see me with a seam ripper, now is not a good time

I don’t always wash quilting cotton in advance, but I do dressmaking fabric. Your fabric is lovely.

Love the fabrics, especially the tree one.
I tend to cut two identical scraps of the fabric then wash one & compare to the unwashed one. The result dictates whether I then wash the whole thing or not. Much less hassle than washing it all!
So many beers, so little time.

I don't usually pre-wash patchwork fabric but I do wash garment fabric and I do wash the wadding for a quilt as that can shrink quite a lot.

Thanks all.
I have decided to wash and treat it like a baby with delicate skin
Safer at the moment I think.
In this weather it won't take long to dry.
Hardest part will be the ironing - not an activity that happens very often in this house!

So fabric washed and dried and ironed
and there's a minor problem

The reddy colour fabric when I opened it out has a white line down on the fold line - all the way down . A manufacturing fault.
It is a good thing I am cutting squares and not strips, anyone doing that would not be pleased.

Phoned up Doughty's they are giving me free postage on my next online order - if only I knew what my next online order would be

Too hot for outside (not acclimatised) so spent a happy afternoon cutting squares for this quilt - 51/2 inch ones. Sewing tomorrow maybe.

Well I've corrected the misaligned rows and corners as best I could. Have to be careful as lack fabric could become a problem.
No idea what I was thinking of when I cut some squares too small.
I blame it on the heat.
Tomorrow I'll start with fresh eyes on part 2 of the, quilt top.

I am ready to sew the 2 sections together now and  need to add a border to 2 sides to evn off the squares.

As it is  to be a light quilt , easy to care for I have been humming and haing about the backing.
I did buy some backing fabric but , let's face it , it isn't that soft. Talking it over with a friend hit on the idea of getting a brushed cotton single sheet and using that.
Went to Dunelm early today and bought one, it is now washed and ready to be ironed :faints:Feel completely happy with the plans now, just need to get myself together and complete the quilt top  now.

Aunt J was discharged from hospital yesterday so time is against me.

Note to self - stop going out and about for a few days (sigh)

Today it is all sandwiched and pinned.
Back aching from crawling around on floor, ran out of proper pins - there has to be an easier way.

Ths isn't that big - any ideas> (table not big enough)
