Shoulder pads - help/advice needed please
« on: June 15, 2017, 11:03:47 AM »
Prompted by comments in the Riding Habit thread I realised that I will need shoulder pads for my toile and then the actual jacket.

Are all shoulder pads equally good (in my case whatever JL has in stock tomorrow) or does quality vary, do people have preferences/on-line sources etc?

Most of the shoulder pads I have seen for sale have been foam-filled, so are all much of a muchness, although some have nicer coverings than others. It's more important to make sure you buy the right depth (or thickness) of pad and that the length of it (from neck to shoulder point) is right for your garment. Also some are designed for use under raglan knitwear and are rounded off on the shoulder point. I often cover bought shoulder pads with lining fabric to go in jackets.

Morgan had a really useful thread on TSF on how to make tailored shoulder pads - now sadly lost! How I wish I had printed it off at the time.

If any one has the Readers Digest book of sewing there are instructions in there for creating your own.  I use this method as I like the idea that they are based on your garment's shape and the front and back are mot the same.
